Yankees’ Game Recap: March 13th

The New York Yankees played the Boston Red Sox on March 13th. Joe Girardi opted to give the starters rest and the only everyday player that marched out for the start of the game was Brian McCann. However, he wasn’t even at his defensive position; he played DH. Girardi might be thinking that he can get McCann extra reps before the season to hopefully get his bat going. McCann was 2-14 heading into today’s game and I am sure that Girardi did not forget about McCann’s dismal 2014 campaign.

Adam Warren got the start on the bump and has continued to be shaky. He gave up four hits and two earned runs in three innings of work. Warren has been erratic and missing his spots; it was most evident in his last two appearances. He is in competition to possibly make the rotation as the fifth starter but is not helping his case very much.

The two earned runs were scored by Mookie Betts who continues his tremendous Spring. The Yankees will have to become aware of Betts and prepare a game plan for him for years to come because he is proving he is the real deal. The first time he was batted in it was by newly acquired Hanley Ramirez and the second time was by Yankee favorite (sarcasm) David Ortiz. Boston will be a team to reckon as usual, but more so with their recent moves.

More from Yankees News

Jonathan Galvez hit a triple in the top of the fourth to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead. Garrett Jones, McCann, and Rob Refsnyder all singled to load the bases and set the plate for Galvez. His deep shot to right field was enough to clear the bases.

The Yankees put up another two runs to make the score 5-2 in the top of the 7th inning. Mason Williams, battling to prove that he isn’t a flop of a prospect, hit a ground-rule double to bring in Galvez and Aaron Judge.

The pitching held up following the early damage to Warren. Chasen Shreve, acquired in the Manny Banuelos trade, pitched two shut out innings. He gave up one walk but outside of that he didn’t give up a hit and struck out one batter. Jose Ramirez also had a strong inning of work in which he struck out one. The battle for spots in the bullpen continues and by the end of Spring Training hopefully it will be clear who deserves to be where.

The game finished strong by Nick Goody‘s inning of relief with one walk and three strike outs and  Jacob Lindgren closed out the game with a save to seal the victory.
