Yankees News: Derek Jeter Surprises Yankees Prospects

Last week, we saw General Manager Brian Cashman state that there should never be another captain of the New York Yankees after recently retired long time shortstop Derek Jeter.  This is unlikely, and something that most fans seemed to disagree with.  Jeter is doing his part to help the young generation of prospects someday have that opportunity.

If you recall, as last season wore down, Jeter stated that he would likely take some time away from the game.  Similar to most athletes to make this claim, apparently Jeter found it hard to stay true to his word.  The legendary former Yankee captain met privately with the Yankees best prospects this offseason.

Jeter was said to have been a great guest as he answered every question he was asked, allowing the youngsters to pick his mind.  He gave advice on what must be done to get to the majors and achieve big league longevity.  Also, he spoke on how to deal with the pressures of playing in New York, something that many, including Jeter’s former friend Alex Rodriguez, have struggled with.

Jeter was eager to hear from the prospects when he visited the inaugural six-week Captain’s Camp, easily the highlight of the event.  Aaron Judge stated that he received great insight while picking Jeter’s mind:

"We asked him about whatever we wanted to.  About baseball.  About his approach.  About how it was playing in New York.  He gave us a lot of good insight, and we’re just going to take it on into the season."

Since players weren’t informed that Jeter would be there, there was a “sense of awe” when he walked into the room, which quickly changed as Jeter made players feel comfortable.  Greg Bird stated:

"Meeting him was special.  We were all just trying to pick his brain."

Jacob Lindgren added:

"It was pretty cool, just talking to him.  It was interesting hearing how he handled his business."

Manager Joe Girardi wasn’t present for Jeter’s appearance at Captain’s Camp, but stated that he wasn’t surprised with Jeter’s decision to agree to mentor the future of the Yankees:

"He really cares about the Yankees and the young kids and trying to pass on what he learned as a player."

Captain’s Camp started on January 17, and was developed by Gary Denbo, who is the new vice president of player development.  He stated that:

"Derek Jeter defines what a professional baseball player should be.  (He has the) desire to be the best, (the) respect for the game, respect for opponents, integrity and championship-caliber ability.  We are trying to develop all of those qualities in our players."
