Banuelos, before the 2012 season was the 12th overall prospect in the game according to MLB.com. Banuelos had Tommy John surgery in 2013 and came back last season. Across three minor league levels last season, Banuelos went 2-3 with a 4.11 ERA. He only threw 76.2 innings last season, striking out 71 with a 1.23 WHIP.
Gordon Blakely, a former top scout for the Yankees, left to be a special assistant to new Braves GM John Hart. It’s certainly possible he had something to do with this, considering the Braves already added Zoilo Almonte, Corban Joseph and Francisco Rondon already this off-season.
In return, Carpenter should fill in the role that Shawn Kelley had last season. Carpenter is eligible for arbitration for the first time this off-season. In 65 games last year, Carpenter went 6-4 with a 3.54 ERA. In 61 innings, he struck out 67, but gave up 61 hits. He had a 2.94 FIP.
Shreve made his major league debut last season, and in 15 games had a 0.73 ERA, striking out 15 in 12 innings. Between AA and AAA, he went 5-3 with a 2.67 ERA. In 64 innings, he only gave up 51 hits and struck out 87.
