Scherzer’s Asking Price Too Rich for Yankees

During the last few days there has been rampant speculation about a possible deal between Max Scherzer and the Yankees “I don’t think Yankees fans will be looking at Max Scherzer,” said Brian Cashman, regarding a possible deal.

The main issue with this deal is the amount of money Scherzer and his agent, Scott Boras, believe he’s worth. He is seeking a contract nearing the $200 million mark according to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports. Last year he declined a 6-year and $144 million dollars offer from his old team, the Detroit Tigers. “He is on a higher level than we’d like to play in right now,” said Cashman referring to Scherzer’s asking price.

While Scherzer would make a worthwhile addition to the team, the Yankees have approached this year somewhat differently that in the past. Instead of pursuing high profile players, they have plugged the holes in their depth chart with good, fair priced talent. That was the case when the Yankees signed Headley instead of pursuing 3B Pablo Sandoval or even Aramiz Ramirez. The same can be said about the organization’s choice to sign Andrew Miller instead of their now former closer David Robertson

Scherzer’s inclusion in the Yankee roster would bolster a somewhat deficient and injury-prone pitching staff. The nearest pitcher with as many innings pitched as him was 39-year-old Hiroki Kuroda. Kuroda pitched 199 innings with an ERA of 3.71 compared to 215 innings with an ERA of 3.15 by Scherzer. At the very least, he would provide an option to aging ace C.C. Sabathia if he can’t regain his old form.
