Brian McCann’s Lack Of Performance Blamed On Hefty Contract

After signing a five-year, $85-million contract last off-season, the Yankees were stoked on adding Brian McCann to their roster. The organization expected huge numbers from the veteran, but were slightly disappointed in his performance this past season. There were many different reasons speculated as to why this happened, but former hitting coach Kevin Long may have an answer.

Long believes that McCann may have felt pressured to perform well day in and day out due to the large contract, which really took a toll on him. He came to this conclusion because he witnessed something similar happen to former Yankee Curtis Granderson, who signed a four-year, $60-million contract with the Mets last off-season.

“I think it’s common that the first time you come into an organization after you sign a big contract that it plays a little more difficult than it might seem.” Kevin Long told Brendan Kuty of NJ.com. “As the season progressed, Brian McCann got better and better and more comfortable.”

McCann had one of the worst seasons in his career thus far. He batted just .232 with 23 home runs and 75 RBI. His batting average was noted for being 40 points below his average career. With a change of approach, hopefully McCann can turn it around, and become that big power bat that the Yankees have been waiting to see.
