After being convicted of sexually abusing high school girls as a volunteer at Lakewood High School in Cedar Rapids, MI, former New York Yankees outfielder and World Series hero Chad Curtis can longer afford to pay his attorneys, from the law firm of Warner Norcross and Judd. As a result, the firm is attempting to drop Curtis as a client, as he is now facing civil lawsuits from his victims. The school district in which Lakewood High School is located is also being sued by the victims of Curtis.

Since he can no longer afford to pay his legal team, Curtis has filed a motion to represent himself, however, Grand Rapids federal magistrate Ellen Cardmody said the firm will have to continue handling Curtis’ legal representation for the time being. Opposing counsel has argued that allowing Curtis to represent himself only traumatizes the victims again. Cadmody in her decision, said that allowing Curtis to change counsel, or for his representatives to drop him at this stage of proceedings, wouldn’t be fair to other parties involved in the case. The lawsuit filed, is for $4 million dollars.

Curtis is now serving seven years, one month to fifteen years at the Gus Harrison Correctional Facility after being convicted on five counts of criminal sexual conduct. His big league career spanned from 1992 through 2001, having played for the Yankees, Detroit Tigers, and Texas Rangers among others.
