Jesus will rise tomorrow
The Yanks have announced that they will call up uber prospect Jesus Montero on September 1 when rosters expand. Montero, who is billed as one of the top prospects in ball, will see time at catcher and DH and if he is nice he could finagle his way onto the postseason roster as a DH, effectively usurping Jorge’s role. If you’re confused about the eligibility rules for the postseason roster (which are confusing as hell), check this out from Joe Pawlikowski. This is great news as it will be fun to see Jesus rake in the bigs. It’s always entertaining [...]
Who’s hot, who’s not
There are other Yankees that are hot/slumping on the team, but these fellows jump out at me. Also, I just looked at position players; pitchers weren’t taken into account. Hot 1) Nick Swisher Arguably the hottest hitter on the Yanks right now is Nick Swisher. Over his last seven games Swish Dog is batting .320/.452/1.080 with 10 RBI and five walks, and six of his eight hits over that span have been home runs. Sure it’s a small sample size but it’s good to see him hitting after where he was at earlier this season. He now has 21 homers [...]
Injury news
As the Yanks open a three-game set against the Red Sox tonight, they will be without third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who hurt his thumb. He went for an MRI, which came back clean, yesterday but Girardi said it is “questionable” if he will sniff the field at all against Boston. Derek Jeter, who hasn’t played in the last two games after fouling a ball off his right knee, expects to play tonight as the Yanks open their set in Beantown. “I hope so,” he said yesterday. “That’s the plan, but I haven’t done anything. We’ll see when we get there [...]
Yanks-Sox Preview: Series Six Pack + Podcast
Despite the horrible weather in the Northeast over the weekend, the Yankees were able to split the four games they did play with the Baltimore Orioles. Now, the gap between the Yanks and the Red Sox stands at just 1.5 games with a crucial three game series this week. Boston has had two days off due to the weather complications and everyone knows they have the psychological edge on the Bombers, being 10-2 against them this season. Today, we did 2 things: I talked with Derek Stykalo of BoSoxInjection.com and got his thoughts on the Red Sox and I included [...]
Yankees-Orioles Preview: Will the Bats Beat the Storm?
The Yankees sure do know how to end a series. After a historic 22-9 win over the Oakland Athletics, New York heads down to Baltimore to take on the last place Orioles. This is a big series for the Bombers as they prepare to take on the Red Sox early next week at Fenway Park. They come in one game behind Boston, but the question is not about what will happen on- the-field, but more of an off-the-field problem. Hurricane Irene is on its way up the Northeast and is threatening possible cancellations of the games this weekend. The Yankees [...]
Grand ol’ time
After going 3-for-23 with RISP and stranding 19 runners over the first two games of this series, the Yanks remembered they were playing the A’s today and absolutely routed Oakland, 22-9. Not only did the Yanks whoop ass but they also became the first team in the history of MLB to hit three grand slams in one game. Russell Martin had arguably the greatest game of his life, going a career-high 5-for-5 with the second grand slam, a solo homer, two singles and a double that just missed being a homer. He also drove in a career-best six runs and [...]
Yanks in need of a Colon cleansing
It’s no secret that Bartolo Colon has seen his production drop recently. In his first 10 starts of 2011, he held batters to a .224/.269/.378/.647 line with 59 strikeouts to 15 walks over 67 innings. Over that span he yielded 23 runs — 22 earned — on 55 hits with eight homers. Three of those outings were scoreless and he had one complete game while hurling at least seven innings three times (eight frames twice). Then, on June 12, he went on the DL with a strained left hammy. He made his triumphant return on July 2, throwing six innings [...]
A’s-Yankees Podcast Preview: A Brief Return Home
This week, the Yankees make a brief trip back to their friendly confines of Yankee Stadium to take on a team they usually dominate in the Oakland Athletics. New York is 5-1 against them in six games this season and will look to build their current one game lead they have on Boston before they play the Red Sox next week. With all the A.J Burnett drama in Minnesota, the Yankees still took 3 out of 4 and got a lot of positives from their young starters in Phil Hughes and Ivan Nova. Today, we take a look at the [...]
August is the new April?
Prior to August, CC Sabathia was in the running for the Cy Young award. He was neck and neck (and neck?) with Justin Verlander and Jered Weaver, and any three could make a decent case for the CYA. However, since August 1 CC has done nothing but hurt his cause. In his last four starts, CC has yielded 39 hits in 29 innings with 18 runs — 17 earned. His strikeout rate is still great — 28 K to just two BB — but he’s been touched for seven homers…he had given up only six taters all season before August [...]
Some injury news
A-Rod will most likely not play until Saturday, if then. However, he was encouraged after running and doing fielding drills before Thursday’s game. Fabulous Freddy’s scheduled bullpen session was pushed and it is unclear when he will throw again. If he’s not ready to go on Sunday there’s a good chance he will be placed on the DL. AJ will go tomorrow and Philthy will pitch on Saturday, and if Fab Fred can’t pitch Sunday then SuperNova will take the mound in his stead. Joba will be with the team during this series as he begins a weight-lifting program. He [...]
