Yankees trade for Ben Roethlisberger
No they didn’t but they did rape the Orioles tonight, 17-3, to sweep a day-night doubleheader. The Yanks scored a franchise record 12 first-inning runs. Every Yankee had a hit…BY THE END OF THE FIRST INNING! The frame took 58 minutes to complete. The 12 runs (six earned) were the most in any inning since they plated 13 in the eighth inning of a June 21, 2005 game against the Devil Rays. The team record for runs in an inning is 14, recorded on 7/6/20 at Washington. They had 13 runs in an inning twice in 2005. Their 24 hits [...]
Yanks take opener
The Yanks beat the O’s 8-3 in the opener of a day-night doubleheader with help from the bottom of the order. The team’s 1-4 hitters (Gardy, Nunez, Tex, Cano) went 1-for-17 with two RBI (both Gardy’s) and two runs scored. The 5-9 hitters (Swish Dog, Chavez, Posada, Dickerson, Cervelli) went 10-for-19 with six RBI (including a two-run homer from Swish, who went 3-for-4) and six runs scored. Each 5-9 hitter had at least one hit and an RBI and all but Posada — who was the only one without two hits — scored at least once. In other words, the [...]
Blame this one on the O
You can blame a lot of things on AJ Burnett, but not this loss. He wasn’t great but he did enough to win. AJ (8-9) lasted a season-high-tying eight innings and fanned a season-high 10 batters to go with just five hits (albeit all five were extra-base hits including two homers), four earned runs, two walks and a HBP…and got the loss. This L falls on the offense. Through the first seven innings the Yanks had seven base runners, three of which were Posada. That just isn’t going to cut it against Jeremy frickin’ Guthrie. Plus they were 1-for-9 with [...]
News and notes
So was activated from the 60-day DL today, and Girardi said the team will “work him back slow.” I think, and this is just me speculating, that this is a move to keep D-Rob in the eighth-inning role for the time being. Sergio Mitre was put on the 60-day DL with a shoulder problem. Meat Tray was sent for an MRI on the shoulder today. Steve Garrison was optioned to Double-A Trenton today. No word on what happened to Mr. Hat. Girardi said today that Cy Colon will start the first game of tomorrow’s doubleheader and SuperNova will start the [...]
Orioles-Yankees Podcast Preview
The Yankees will end their ten game homestand this weekend against the Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore has been reeling all season and can’t seem to find a way to beat the Bombers either in the Bronx or in Camden Yards. There will be a doubleheader on Saturday, so be prepared for that. With the trade deadline on Sunday afternnon at 4:00, all eyes will be on one pitcher Saturday night and that is Ivan Nova. I expect this homestand to be finished off with success. Here are the topics I talk about: Pitching Matchups Nova replacing Hughes? Tillman and Britton back [...]
RIP Hideki Irabu
Former Yankees pitcher Hideki Irabu was found dead in his LA home today, police are investigating a possible suicide. He was 42. Irabu, who is perhaps best known for being called a “fat pussy toad” by Steinbrenner, was a highly regarded acquisition in 1997. Steinbrenner signed him to a four-year, $12.8 million contract after a trade with the Padres, but he never really panned out. He threw three unspectacular seasons with the Yanks — including one awful postseason appearance — before being traded to the Expos. He last pitched in the majors in 2002 with the Rangers, and attempted a [...]
Some quick injury notes + news
So was not activated before today’s game, but he will be before Friday’s tilt against the Orioles. He threw back-to-back games on Sunday and Monday, so the team felt it was best to wait given tomorrow’s off day. Girardi said before today’s game that Pedro Feliciano will most likely not pitch this season. “I would think so, yeah. He’s not doing much.” Feliciano is in Tampa “trying” to play catch, according to the skipper. Anybody who knows anything could see this coming for a while. Damaso Marte, on the other hand, is still throwing bullpens in Tampa so it’s possible [...]
Random CC worship
CC Sabathia is good at pitching, this is not news. How good he has been recently may surprise you though. In his last 14 starts, CC is 12-2 with a 2.06 ERA while holding batters to a .210/.259/.280 line in 109 innings. He has yielded just 83 hits over that span with 26 runs — 25 earned — to go with 106 strikeouts to 24 walks. Beast. He’s been even filthier over his last seven starts (6-1), with the lone loss coming on an eight-inning, five-hit, two-run performance against the Rays on July 21. His finest work of the season [...]
Sweet 16
In the 100th game of the season, the Yankees handed the Mariners their 16th straight loss — a 10-3 shellacking. The win, which featured a 1 hour and 57 minute rain delay, put the Yanks 20 games over .500 (60-40) for the first time all year. The offense violated Seattle pitching all night; seven different players scored a run while five players drove in a run. Tex (2-for-4; 3 RBI) slugged his 99th home run as a Yankee (27th on the year) and now has two homers in his last four games after going 17 straight without any dingers. His [...]
The Yankees began their ten game homestand with a series victory over the Oakland Athletics. Now, they will try to gain ground on the Red Sox in the division as they host the Seattle Mariners who have lost their last fifteen game. This is a quite a contrast to the Mariners’ team that took two of three from the Yankees at SAFECO Field back in late May. Most, if not all Yankee fans expect them to sweep this series! However, you know by now I am not one who easily predicts sweeps. That is especially the case when the [...]
