Another win, another Yankee goes down

facebooktwitterreddit

The Yanks bullpen faltered a little bit down the stretch (four runs over the final two innings) but the Good Guys still hung on to eek out a 7-5 win in the finale of a three-game set against the O’s. The win was NYY’s fourth in a row and seventh in eight tries, but there was bigger news to come out of the game…disturbing news, actually.

Many wondered what was up when Andy Pettitte was pulled after five innings and 77 pitches, well wonder no more. Pettitte was yanked after feeling discomfort in his left arm; discomfort that was also present in his previous start against the ChiSox, albeit in a different spot on the arm. So it seems the SI jinx has struck again, Jeter better stay healthy. Jorge (mild calf strain) and Mo (tightness in left side) were already a little dinged up but should be ready as the team heads to Boston (Mo definitely, Posada is still a “question mark” according to Girardi). Pettitte might not be able to pitch during The Greatest Rivalry this weekend, although an MRI later today might say otherwise. This “tightness” in his left arm might be nothing to worry about as Dave Eiland said taking him out was a precautionary measure and he probably could have stayed in the game but you never know. Keep your fingers crossed and expect an update as more info rolls in.

Pettitte:

"Any time you’re talking about the area around the elbow, you start to worry a little bit. I think it’ll be fine, but I’ll know a lot more when the MRI results come back."

Pettitte’s injury is one of a long list of blows to the Yanks’ health. A-Rod (right leg woes), CHoP (hamstring), Grandy (strained groin) and Javy (ineffectiveness) have all missed time and losing Pettitte, and his 4-0 record and 2.08 ERA, would hurt the rotation dearly…especially with Javy pitching like a horse’s arse. If Javy wants to clear his good name and be embraced by the fans NOW is the time for him to sack up and pitch like a stud.

As I’ve said before: PLEASE GOD DO NOT LET THIS SEASON PLAY OUT LIKE THE 2009 METS CAMPAIGN. PLEASE!!!!

On to the game. Believe it or not, there were a lot of positives:

  • Swish Dog is now 9-for-19 in the month of May after hitting a solo homer Wednesday
  • Nick The Stick went 3-for-3 and missed the cycle by a triple
  • The Yanks held the O’s to 0-for-16 with RISP over the three-game series. I know it’s just Baltimore, but that’s impressive.

With the positives comes the negatives:

  • D-Rob doesn’t look like himself. He gave up a pair of solo homers in 2/3 inning.
  • Not only D-Rob, but the bullpen as a whole, sans Ace, looked like shit. I can’t wait for the Yanks to get Mo back.
  • Cano went 0-for-4 with two Ks and saw his average drop to .362. He seems to be cooling off,  but it’s not like I expected to him to keep up that torrid pace for the whole season.
  • Tex and A-Rod have got to start hitting. I have a sinking feeling that A-Rod’s leg isn’t 100%.

In other news: there was a bomb threat at Fenway today.
