The Holiday Season is supposed to bring out the best in people. On Wednesday, it brought out the worst in someone. Earlier in the day, rumors began circulating on social media that New York Yankees legend and fan favorite color commentator, Paul O'Neill, was diagnosed with cancer. The Yankees, via the YES Network, swiftly came out to disprove the rumor.

Since 2002, O'Neill has been delighting fans in the booth with his insightful analysis, sharp sense of humor, and stories of hard-fought battles of the past. For many younger fans, their only exposure to O'Neill has been through his work as an analyst.

Yankees refute awful Paul O'Neill rumor, confirm that the legend is in good health

The basis of the rumor came from fabricated quotes attributed to O'Neill that got shared around on fan-run Facebook pages. In the age of AI, it's important to be critical of the source and only trust reporting from verified insiders to prevent this type of stuff from getting out of hand.

Thankfully, it seems that the 62-year-old former Yankees right fielder is in good health.

O'Neill came to the Yankees thanks to a 1992 trade that sent veteran outfielder Roberto Kelly to the Cincinnati Reds. Away from his difficult relationship with former Yankee and then-Reds manager Lou Piniella, O'Neill's career started trending up in 1993, which was his first season in pinstripes.

The strike-shortened 1994 season saw O'Neill reach new heights, taking home the American League batting crown on the strength of his .359 average. From that point forward, O'Neill would make a name for himself as a fiery competitor, fierce self-critic, and linchpin of the late-90s Yankees dynasty.

He'd hang up the cleats after an emotional World Series defeat at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001. From that point forward, fans saw another side of the warrior they'd come to know and love, with O'Neill's country boy charm, affable nature, and fondness for sharing some of his favorite snacks, entranced viewers.

We're happy to hear that this rumor is false, and wish Paul and his family a Happy Thanksgiving, and a happy and healthy holiday season.
