The 2024 Winter Meetings officially begin Sunday, Dec. 8, but won't be kicked into high gear until Monday most likely. As New York Yankees fans prepare for the most famous baseball personnel to arrive in Dallas, we're here to catch everybody up on the annual event and how it will affect the Bombers in 2025.
This should be Brian Cashman's busiest time of the offseason, as it was last year when he worked out a trade with the San Diego Padres to acquire Juan Soto right after the meetings concluded. This time around? He'll be looking to sign Soto to a record contract.
What are Major League Baseball's Winter Meetings?
Each year, team and league executives, as well as countless players and agents, meet for four days to negotiate contracts and trades. The Rule 5 Draft also takes place at the Winter Meetings. Recently, the MLB Draft Lottery and Classic Baseball Era vote for the Hall of Fame were added to the festivities.
This four-day span will feature the most news and rumors of the entire offseason, so fans must be prepared to be inundated.
Where are the 2024 MLB Winter Meetings?
This year's Winter Meetings will take place in Dallas at the Hilton Anatole Hotel. This is the third time Dalals will host the event, with 2000 and 2005 being the other two occurrences.
Yankees Rumors: Most notable 2024 Winter Meetings speculation
Soto is the headliner here. Many wondered if he would sign before Sunday, but that doesn't appear to be the case. MLB likely wants this to be the spectacle of all spectacles, especially after the manner in which Shohei Ohtani anti-climactically agreed to a 10-year, $700 million contract with a ton of deferred money with the Los Angeles Dodgers last offseason. The Yankees remain in the mix for Soto, and the bidding has reportedly eclipsed $600 million, with the Mets, Red Sox, Blue Jays and Dodgers also involved.
Outside of that, the Yankees are said to have interest in Corbin Burnes, Max Fried, Willy Adames, Cody Bellinger (via trade), Walker Buehler, Christian Walker, Tommy Kahnle, Jonathan Loaisiga, and likely more. But it's never that simple. Expect some dark horse candidates to come out of the woodwork and for Cashman to possibly surprise us with a trade or two for guys we weren't even thinking of.
