What a night. The New York Yankees were being no-hit through seven innings against Seattle Mariners starter Bryan Woo. They were down 5-0 heading into the eighth. It looked like one of those dead-behind-the-eyes games from the offense that you could simulate to the end.
But then the magic happened, culminating with the worst tag attempt possible from Mariners star and MLB home run leader Cal Raleigh. We'll get to that in a second.
Jazz Chisholm led off the eighth with a single, and the pressure was off. Austin Wells brought him home on a sac fly and Giancarlo Stanton hit the first pinch hit home run of his career to drive in two more. Just like that, it was 5-3 heading into the ninth.
The Yankees had to face the best closer in the league, though, as Andres Muñoz took the mound. In a stroke of luck, they picked up on one of his tells and were able to capitalize.
After Trent Grisham logged a leadoff single, he noticed Muñoz was tipping his slider. When he made it to second base after Cody Bellinger's single, Grisham was seen waving his arms to notify the hitter that Muñoz was telegraphing his most successful pitch. The Yankees had an edge against the slider, which opposing hitters had a .072 batting average against this year.
The result? Two more runs. They loaded the bases with two outs and Austin Wells delivered with a two-run single to tie it.
Cal Raleigh said Andres Munõz was tipping his slider in the 9th. He saw the Yankees clearly pick up on it.

"Obviously, they weren’t making it very discreet."

Yankees' Trent Grisham relayed signals as Andres Muñoz was tipping pitches
Then we went into extras — the dreaded extras for the Yankees, who are the worst team in baseball in such situations. Somehow, though, most of those struggles have come on the road ... when they have the chance to strike first. They've been better at home for whatever reason.
Devin Williams shut down the side in the top of the 10th and let out a roar as he continues his rebound during this unpredictable 2025. Then it was up to the offense in the bottom of the 10th to deliver.
Once again, they loaded the bases. Two walks moved Anthony Volpe, the ghost runner, to third base, and Aaron Judge stepped into the batter's box. He hit a shallow fly ball to center field, and it looked to be just enough to get Volpe in. For a moment there, though, it appeared as if Volpe was dead to rights on Julio Rodriguez's throw to the plate.
Yankees' win of the year made possible by Cal Raleigh's hilariously bad tag attempt
In fact ... he was! Raleigh just made the worst ever tag attempt to gift the Yankees a three-game sweep and bring them back from the dead after their most recent 8-17 stretch.
How did Cal Raleigh not tag out Anthony Volpe 🤣 pic.twitter.com/xNtbE76Mgq

Almost as egregious as Raleigh's tag ... how was Volpe, who is supposed to be "fast", nearly out by a mile on this play? The polarizing shortstop made up for it with one of the best slides you'll ever see. He made sure to stay on the outside of Raleigh and used his right hand to swipe home plate. You can see on the replay that Raleigh was expecting Volpe to be closer to him when he went for the tag. He completely whiffed.

That's a 6-5 victory. Four in a row. All that's left is the Chicago Cubs this weekend before the All-Star break. Though they're one of the best teams in the league, the Yankees' momentum is undeniable at this point, and they've figured out a way to keep it going ever since Cody Bellinger's season-saving defensive play against the Mets on Sunday.
Yankees fans have never been more excited to put such a terrible stretch of play behind them. Now all that's needed is for the Bombers to pull off something like this against the Red Sox or Astros and everybody will be fully buying in.
