Yankees-William Contreras trade dream sounds too good to be true as Brewers look to defy past patterns

The Yankees should be all over William Contreras if he becomes available on the trade market.

The New York Yankees could kill two birds with one stone this offseason by landing a crown jewel in catcher William Contreras in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. Contreras will be a free agent after the 2027 season and the Brewers are known for trading their stars on expiring deals, from Josh Hader to Devin Williams to Freddy Peralta, to name a few.

The Yankees need more star power, offensive help, a right-handed bat and a right-handed hitting catcher. Contreras would fill all of these needs, and while Austin Wells performed much better after the trade deadline this past season, the Yankees would certainly be justified in upgrading at the position.

Why the Brewers could break their pattern and keep William Contreras

Contreras looks like a clear fit for the Yankees, but fans shouldn't get their hopes up that Milwaukee will trade him this offseason. One National League scout who spoke with FanSided doesn't believe the Brewers will deal Contreras.

"It's hard to see the Brewers trading the only star on their roster (in Contreras)," the scout said. "Especially with the influx of cash flow in the World Series."

The Brewers are currently three wins away from their first World Series title in franchise history after taking Game 1 from the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night. Contreras has been a big part of that, slashing .394/.487/.697 with a 1.184 OPS, three home runs and six RBI in nine postseason games. These elite numbers should have the Brewers thinking about a contract extension, especially if they win a World Series championship.

The argument is that the Brewers are a small market team and operate like one, so they should trade Contreras while his value is at an all-time high to net the best return possible. If not, the Brewers could risk losing Contreras in free agency to a bigger spender.

The Yankees should go hard for Contreras if the Brewers make him available, and should be heavily in on him if he reaches free agency next year. The Yankees and Brewers already made a deal that sent closer Devin Williams to the Bronx ahead of the 2025 season. It didn't work out for the Yankees, but Contreras is budding into a superstar and would be an instant boost to their lineup. An offense centered around Contreras, Aaron Judge, Ben Rice, Luis Garcia Jr. and Cody Bellinger could contend for a World Series. However, at least one scout doesn't think the Brewers will actually trade Contreras this offseason.
