Yankees Weather Update 7/31: Cubs series opener threatened by rain ahead of trade deadline

After two horrific losses on the south side of Chicago, the Yankees will make their way up to the north end for a three-game set with the Cubs. But Friday's action could be threatened by weather in the area.

With wind gusts up to 20 MPH, there are increased chances of rain for the duration of the afternoon contest, which is scheduled for 2:20 p.m. ET. And to be honest with you ... a day off might be magical after what this team did to us on Wednesday and Thursday.

Will Warren is scheduled to pitch with an exhausted bullpen behind him. The Yankees have not made a roster move to address their staff for the weekend, which feels irresponsible even with the trade deadline on Monday. Changes need to be made. Now.

There hasn't been an official announcement on the weather situation, probably because the rain is supposed to be light at the start of the game. It'll pick up moderately throughout, but the last thing we want to see is a mid-game delay. That'll be a nightmare for everybody.

Right now, there is a 100% chance of rain, and that number mostly stays at or above 60% until 6 p.m. Precipitation remains in the forecast well into the night, though it gradually dips from 60% to 20%.

@NYYRainDelay usually has the goods for us, but there hasn't been action on the account for a few days. There are a lot of boots on the ground folks in Chicago providing their insight. Some are wondering why the game hasn't been called yet ... but guess what? That's because the weather also looks terrible for tomorrow! A doubleheader will be difficult since the rain expects to clear up by game time on Saturday night.

For now, expect the game to be played because it'll be nearly impossible to reschedule today's game. Both teams play on Monday, so a doubleheader situation on Sunday is doable but not ideal with the Yankees traveling back to New York to face the Cardinals. Not to mention, the trade deadline is 6 p.m. ET on Monday and teams will be eyeing deals after game play on Sunday.

We don't need to delay those proceedings as well. We'll just need to keep an eye on the weather throughout Friday and hope we can escape unscathed.
