UPDATE: Play will resume at 6:15 p.m. ET.
Thought the New York Yankees would get out of Colorado easy, did ya? They lost the opener on Friday night after the offense went silent, and they scared fans again before their 10-run outburst in the fifth inning of Saturday's victory. On Sunday, with a 4-2 lead and runners on second and third, the game was delayed due to heavy rain.
It's unclear how long this one will last, but thunderstorms were in the forecast not too long before the tarp came out on the field. The YES broadcast predicted this one will be well over 30 minutes, especially after lightning was spotted in the distance.
The Yankees chased Antonio Senzatela from the game in the fifth as Colorado went to the bullpen. They called on Jake Bird, who's been having a good year, but was in the midst of getting worked by New York before the rain saved him. Anthony Volpe was at the plate with two outs and runners in scoring position. That's where the game will pick back up, since five full innings need to be completed for the outcome to be official.
Will Warren was through four innings of work at just 57 pitches. He allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out seven. Aaron Judge has continued his hot streak going 2-for-3 with an RBI double. Paul Goldschmidt and JC Escarra also had two hits each.
Yankees vs Rockies Rain Delay, May 25: Details, Weather Updates, Start Time
This is not a good situation for the Yankees given the potential schedule headache. New York will head out Sunday night to travel to Anaheim for a three-game series with the Angels. They'll have Thursday off before facing the Dodgers in LA next weekend.
The Rockies start a series against the Cubs on Monday at 2:20 p.m. ET in Chicago, so they'll be skipping town too. Both teams have an off day on Thursday, but that would be a nightmare makeup scenario, especially with the Rockies heading to New York to face the Mets.
Should the delay last long enough to prevent a restart, this could turn into an "if necessary" situation if and when restarting the suspended game makes sense later in the year. We know it won't matter for the MLB-worst Rockies, but as fans very well know with the Yankees, this could be the difference between playoff seeding should everything continue on a similar trajectory through the end of the season.
Stay tuned for updates as they become available.
