UPDATE, 1:22 PM EST: First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM EST, per the Yankees' most recent announcement. But will this game get completed as dialed?

After dropping the middle game of their series vs. the Tampa Bay Rays, the New York Yankees will enter Sunday's game running out a lineup that, um, lessens their chances of success. That is, unless the rains come.

Sunday's forecast is brutal in the Bronx, and it marks the first of many consecutive days where the Yankees might struggle to get a game in. Though there may be a window to get this game in, the Yankees have pulled the tarp onto the field about an hour before scheduled first pitch.

Yankees vs. Rays Rain Delay Details: Weather worsens for this week in the Bronx

If this game does get played, the Yankees will be without Anthony Volpe, who suffered a shoulder injury and felt a "pop" in the eighth inning of Saturday's loss, just before everything unraveled. The Yankees are planning to run out the most noncompetitive possible version of their lineup, featuring JC Escarra, Pablo Reyes, Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Peraza.

Volpe should return later in the week, but for now, he's considered day-to-day with a "cranky" shoulder.

As for that "later in the week" ... we have no idea when it's coming. Let's just say, based on the forecast, Volpe may get the extended reprieve he needs without taking a trip to the IL. There are afternoon showers slated for both Monday and Tuesday, followed by "PM thunderstorms" on Wednesday. That span of time represents their entire series against the San Diego Padres, a team that doesn't come to the east coast very often.

The Yankees and Major League Baseball will be very diligent about trying to squeeze as many of those Padres games as possible into small windows, but might be hesitant to overextend themselves for Sunday's day game, with so much of the afternoon overwhelmed by powerful showers. The Rays come back to the Bronx one more time this season, July 28-31 (followed by a Yankees and Rays mutual off day). Technically, the Rays' home stadium has the same dimensions as the ballpark in the Bronx, too. Unorthodox, but ... just sayin'.
