The date both Yankees and Mets fans circled on their calendar the moment Juan Soto signed his $765 million contract in Queens is finally here. The Subway Series kicks off Friday night (May 15) with both New York teams among the best in MLB.
Soto will make his return to the Bronx and will likely be met with boos, but everyone knows he will welcome them (and probably respond emphatically). The man feeds off that energy. That will be the most followed storyline throughout the weekend.
But don't forget about the tidbits in between. Former Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza is the Mets manager, who led the team to an NLCS run last year. Former Yankees closer Clay Holmes is having a very good start to his season after transitioning to a starting pitcher (but he won't take the mound in this series). Former Yankee Luis Torrens is the Mets' backup catcher.
Despite significant injuries on both sides, the Yankees (25-18) and Mets (28-16) lead their divisions at the moment. Everybody knew they'd be contending, but these starts out of the gate have exceeded expectations.
Aaron Judge has been on a rampage against his former teammates in 2025, and though Soto won't be pitching to him, Yankees fans are hoping the reigning AL MVP can continue that trend in a different manner.
