UPDATE, 4:05 PM: The tarp is coming off the field, and the game is expected to resume around 4:30 PM EST.
Taking over right field from an obviously compromised Aaron Judge, Yankees star Cody Bellinger fielded a single in the sopping wet rain and gunned down a racing Bo Bichette at the plate for the final out ... of the top of the sixth inning. But will it be the final out of the game? Signs point to ... no.
Despite some Yankees fans wishing for the easy way out (we totally get it), the massive storm that just swirled over Yankee Stadium seems destined to pass, though rain will be a concern throughout the remainder of the weekend.
Thanks to the very helpful Yankees Rain Delay Forecast Twitter account, it seems a severe weather warning is in effect until 3:30 PM EST, and the severe weather that was foretold ambushed the Yankees before they could sneak out of the sixth. Thankfully, Bellinger took it upon himself to send the fellas temporarily to the locker room in good spirits.
Yankees Rain Delay vs. Blue Jays: Start time updates to come soon
Pretty good day for Aaron Judge to be DHing, based on his appearance in right field in the Friday opener. Judge playing the field will certainly help the Yankees stay flexible, and his range is an improvement over what Giancarlo Stanton can bring. Unfortunately, he's only able to field the position while using his right arm with extreme caution - condescending Aaron Boone statements about creative cutoffs will only go so far in quelling concerns (eds. note: not far at all).
More updates to come as we learn information on a potential restart. The Yankees could use more runs in the bottom of the sixth and beyond, to say the least. While this rain delay is unlikely to end the game, it could end Blue Jays starter Chris Bassitt's day, who topped 80 pitches through five frames.
Meanwhile, Luis Gil followed Cam Schlittler's tough start with six strong innings, holding a powerful Blue Jays lineup at bay that had surged in the days prior to this showdown beginning (of course). Kevin Gausman brilliantly saved the bullpen on Friday night, but perhaps the Yankees will get a crack at it soon.
