Yankees’ vague Aaron Judge update feels like his 2026 season is in danger

Aaron Judge made everyone wait nearly seven weeks for a meaningful update on his fractured rib. What the New York Yankees finally delivered Friday did little to justify the anticipation.

Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reported Friday that Judge’s latest MRI showed “some” healing in the stress fracture in his first right rib. That's technically encouraging, but it's also about the only concrete positive the Yankees could offer.

Judge isn't fully healed, and he hasn't been cleared to resume baseball activities. Another doctor still needs to review the imaging, and at least one more MRI will be required before he can begin moving toward a return. In other words, the Yankees still don't have a timeline for his return.

Judge hasn't played since May 31. It is now more than halfway through July, and he apparently is not even ready to take the first meaningful step in his rehabilitation. He still has to receive clearance, restart baseball activities, rebuild his timing and conditioning and potentially complete some form of rehab assignment. That process could take weeks even after the fracture is fully healed, and the Yankees still don't know when that will happen.

Judge insisted Friday that he will “definitely” return this season, and manager Aaron Boone echoed the expectation that the Yankees’ superstar will play again in 2026. Their confidence is understandable; Judge isn't going to publicly concede that his season might be over, and Boone isn't going to do it for him. But optimism isn't a timeline.

Aaron Judge remains determined to return to Yankees lineup 2026, but latest injury update leaves room for doubt

The longer Judge remains unable to perform baseball activities, the more difficult it becomes to envision a realistic path back to the Yankees' lineup this season. Rib injuries are particularly complicated for a hitter because nearly every part of the swing — rotation, extension and follow-through — puts stress on the affected area. The Yankees can't rush Judge back simply because their season might depend on it.

Even the most encouraging interpretation of Friday’s update suggests Judge is still multiple weeks away. A less optimistic reading raises the possibility that he will not return until late August or September, assuming there are no setbacks. By then, the Yankees could be asking him to regain his timing against major-league pitching during the most important games of their season.

Jasson Domínguez will continue receiving regular playing time in right field, but there's no replacing Judge. The Yankees built their offense around one of the most dominant hitters in baseball, and every vague update makes his absence feel more permanent.

Judge may remain defiant about returning this year, and the Yankees may continue expressing confidence. But until he's cleared to pick up a bat, his 2026 season has to be considered in serious danger.
