Yankees turn page on insane Cardinals loss with massive George Lombard Jr. roster shuffle

The New York Yankees, in an outing reminiscent of their post-deadline collapse in Miami last year (in a twisted way), fell to the St. Louis Cardinals Monday night 13-7, allowing seven runs in the eighth inning after scoring four in the bottom of the seventh. After being pilloried for not adding relievers at the deadline, that achilles heel came home to roost immediately. The mood of the fanbase was, admittedly, dour. But Luis Garcia Jr., who delivered the brief lead-flipping home run, seems like a fit. Heliot Ramos, another reinforcement, arrives tomorrow. And, as midnight approached, the Yankees decided that wasn't quite enough offense.

After strong hints throughout the day that superstar prospect George Lombard Jr.'s promotion was nigh, the Yankees decided that it was actually now.

As every fan climbed into bed disgusted by Angel Chivlli being hung out to dry, a flickering screen and an alert ping temporarily brightened both the room and their days. Lombard Jr. will join the big club on Tuesday. Now, the fun begins: Who goes down?

Yankees demote Jasson Domínguez, Anthony Volpe, Angel Chivilli for George Lombard Jr. call-up

Man ... if the Yankees had only traded for one more reliever and had an off day Monday instead of an absurd loss ... how much better would we feel right now?

Volpe's outplayed Jose Caballero for most of their time together in the bigs, but Caballero bashed a game-winning home run on Sunday and another tater on Monday. He'll now head back into a utility role while Lombard Jr. becomes the starter. Domínguez hasn't done enough with either the glove or the bat to justify a roster spot right now, let alone a starring role. Chivilli was nails ... until Monday evening, when it hurt most. He won't be back for 15 days.

Lombard Jr. overran his Triple-A adjustment period and hit .268 with an .845 OPS in 56 Triple-A games (with an injury absence sandwiched in between). He's riding a 30-game on-base streak at the level.

Tuesday's lineup will look very different after the Yankees cleaned out their pipes. Something tells me the theatricality of having Lombard in the bigs before Old-Timers' Day on Saturday held some significance. Here's to hoping the bullpen can match the moment moving forward as well despite a stunning lack of reinforcements.
