Yankees traded one of 2026 Bowman Chrome’s top chase autos for absolute garbage

It's difficult to sit here at the end of 2026 and say, "The Yankees' farm system, while loaded with pitchers, isn't loaded enough! They need one MORE who's a year or so away from the bigs!" That said, if you're looking to make major trades, it doesn't hurt to have a pitcher like Christian Zazueta tucked into the middle of your farm, ready to make a Top 100-level impact on the market.

Henry Lalane was flipped in exchange for Heliot Ramos, and the Yankees could've done even better if they'd been able to dangle Zazueta, one of the absolute hottest names in the newly released 2026 Bowman Chrome baseball set.

Unfortunately, Zazueta was no longer an available asset to the Yanks — he's been in a Dodgers uniform since the Caleb Ferguson trade of 2024.

As investors look to boost their personal financial profiles by chasing Zazueta's Bowman 1st autos — pitching prospects typically break and are frowned upon, but that hasn't stopped his Reptilians from being listed for nearly $3,000 — the Yankees can sit and lick their wounds, knowing they had an unlockable pitcher who they used on half-season of a lefty reliever flop.

Dinging the Yankees for a rare pitching misevaluation feels unfair, given how much excellent development work they've done in that department the past few years. Still ... this one is so glaring it merits mention. We're not impugning the pitching lab. We're just noting that a dude with $250 base autos on release day would've been nice to keep around.

Yankees' ill-fated Christian Zazueta-Caleb Ferguson trade history

The Yankees acquired Ferguson to be one of their seventh-inning options after plenty of seasons of playoff pedigree with the Dodgers. He underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the 2021 season, but posted a 1.82 ERA in 34 2/3 innings after returning in 2022. That trended down to a 3.43 mark/3.34 FIP in a fuller season in 2023, and the Dodgers used that as evidence to cut bait at the right time; he posted a 5.13 ERA in 42 games with the Yankees and was ditched at the trade deadline, Camilo Doval-style, to the Astros. It just didn't click. Early in the campaign, he was known for scuffling with the ghost runner in extra innings. By the end of his rope, he was scuffling with anything and everything.

Meanwhile, Zazueta didn't flourish right away — 6.36 ERA in his first full-season ball in the Dodgers system in 2024 — but broke out with a 2.41 ERA in 17 starts last season, then followed it up with an explosive 140 Ks in 98 2/3 innings this year (3.65 ERA across two levels, peaking at Double-A Tulsa).

The Dodgers knew exactly how to handle his bedeviling arm, and the Yankees couldn't quite see the vision. Bowman Chrome investors? They appreciate the Dodgers' hard work, too. And if anyone wants some Caleb Ferguson chrome, I'll be sitting right here waiting.
