The Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award finalists are officially live, and the New York Yankees got the reminder of year-over-year slippage that they definitely didn't need ahead of a pivotal and time-crunched offseason.
Ben Rice is involved, though he's a finalist at DH rather than first base. That's ... a problem for next year. For now, congrats to Ben Arroz and his 41 home runs.
No, the real issue is what happened in the Team Finalist field. The four American League teams recognized are the AL (and AL East) champion Tampa Bay Rays, the Houston Astros (league-leaders in home runs), the Chicago White Sox, and the Minnesota Twins.
Not recognized? The New York Yankees, last year's team award winners.
Where did New York Yankees' team Silver Slugger repeat bid go wrong?

The Yankees encountered one major complication this summer, the likes of which we wouldn't wish on our worst enemy. Aaron Judge departed at the beginning of June after harboring a rib injury that dated back to late-April and sapped his production. He returned in September, then suffered a calf strain that derailed his playoff comeback before it began. Any lineup without Aaron Judge is bound to be worse off. Significantly.
But the Yankees brought back Cody Bellinger on a longer-term deal and Trent Grisham on a short one. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was entering his walk year, coming off an individual Silver Slugger honor at second base in 2025, and poised for bigger things with personal gain in mind. Austin Wells was a World Baseball Classic breakout star in the Dominican Republic clubhouse. There was no reason to believe New York's offense couldn't continue to be a top-tier unit, with or without Judge (and Stanton).
The purpose of this article is not to bemoan the Yankees' lineup integrity as if a healthy Judge had been a part of the operation all year. Of course the reality of his absence must be acknowledged. But to collapse to this extent? To go from back-to-back team Silver Slugger honors in 2024 and 2025, posting the highest OPS and most runs scored in '25, to the second-most homers, ninth-most runs scored, and 11th-best OPS is a drastic dip.
This underscores both the unique potency of Judge and the reality that several other pieces in place had the worst offensive seasons of their primes at the worst possible time. Congratulations to the finalists. Maybe this is the warning the Yankees needed not to rest on their laurels.
