Yankees somehow exposed major flaw with insane 13-run inning vs Athletics

We're not complaining, but ...

A 5-1 road trip. A deficit in the AL East that has now dropped to 1.5 games. Life is good for the New York Yankees. We know it could always change on a dime, so we're trying to appreciate the positives while we can.

Like Sunday's 13-run inning! That was awesome, wasn't it? The Yankees made history with those 11 hits and four walks. It was the stuff of legends.

Except ... that was the entirety of their offensive production on the day. They registered just ONE WALK across the other eight innings. Zero hits. Zero runs. Nothing. They went six up and six down to start the game, and then the A's faced the minimum from innings 4-9.

So while there's real reason to celebrate how special this offense can be with outbursts such as Sunday's third inning ... there should probably be equal concern with how abruptly dormant the unit goes.

This has been a worry of fans ever since 2017 when the offense failed to show up in the ALCS against the Houston Astros. Yes, we know the Astros were cheating, but that didn't influence the Yankees scoring a grand total of three runs in their four losses. That simply can't happen. And it's been a similar story with their postseason performances ever since.

Yankees' boom-or-bust offense was on full display in Sunday's series win vs Athletics

Much like the stock market, things are great when they're booming! When the Yankees are connecting and in a rhythm, they are unquestionably the most potent offense in the league. But when the bear market approaches? That's when things get bleak and everything goes wrong.

It's constant swing and miss (they even struck out 10 times in their 13-8 win!). It's constant failures with RISP when they go cold. It's the inability to string together multiple hits when they desperately need to. They'll endlessly walk, but they'll do nothing with those baserunners. We've seen glimpses of it this year. And it's not like they're alone. Baseball is a painful slog for most teams when you're talking 162 games. Not to mention, sometimes the Yankees' massive spurts actually inflate their average offensive numbers. This year, they have seven games of scoring 10 or more runs. That's awesome. But they also have eight games scoring one or zero runs. That's just how baseball goes.

The good news? This Yankees team is a bit different in 2026. They're fifth in MLB with 55 stolen bases. Their .243 batting average is 13th in the league. They are exhibiting more skill than just OBP and SLG, which is a big plus. Now it'll be all about bringing forth that relentlessness against elite pitching or when their backs are against the wall. For example, with all the talent they have, they just can't score one run in the final two contests of a four-game set against the Blue Jays after winning the first two. It's moments like that where they let an opponent come back to life when they don't deserve it.

Also, in their last 25 playoff games, the Yankees have scored 10 or more runs just once. That came in a blowout win over the LA Dodgers in the World Series when they were already down 3-0. So, yeah, while running up the score is great and all, there haven't been many instances where we've seen it truly overwhelm the best opponents on the biggest stage.

Make all the history you want. We will enjoy every second of it. Fans will just need to see this more when it really counts.
