Carlos Lagrange helping the 2026 Yankees seems like a matter of when, not if, whether it's out of the bullpen or in a rotation role. Unfortunately, his demotion to the minors at the end of spring training alsot felt similarly inevitable. The hammer came down on Thursday, and I'd bet the Yankees probably wish they'd saved the news for a day when Ryan Weathers wasn't busy imploding down in Dunedin.
Weathers and Luis Gil are still far more likely than not to be in the Opening Day rotation, despite recent stumbles. Weathers' stuff looks great, but his results look dreadful. Gil's fastball looks ineffective, and the downward trend line in performance now matches the metrics.
But if the Yankees do boldly demote Gil, as they've floated in recent days while trying to set a four-man rotation during the season's first rotation cycle, it'll be either Ryan Yarbrough or Paul Blackburn who picks up his slack.
Lagrange, whose command may be a long-term concern, but who had nothing to worry about at any point this spring, will instead be heading to Triple-A with a spotless resumé and plenty of beyond impressive MLB reps.
Prior to today’s split squad games, the Yankees optioned RHP Angel Chivilli to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Following today’s split squad games, the Yankees reassigned RHP Carlos Lagrange to minor league camp.
When will Yankees fans see Carlos Lagrange after his semi-unfair spring training demotion?
After Lagrange blew a Red Sox B squad away on Wednesday, pushing his spring scoreless streak to 11 consecutive innings and breaking radar guns and Pitching Ninja's Twitter account at the same time, the right-hander was asked whether or not he felt ready for MLB. Before his translator could even prompt him with the question, Lagrange blurted "yes".
He's well aware, of course, that he has something unteachable. Pitchers with Lagrange's arm don't come around very often, and his March work was tantalizingly real. It genuinely did feel like this might've been the moment that it finally all crested and came together as the universe cleared his path.
Instead, it appears we'll have to have the "toothpaste back in the tube" conversation later this summer as the Yankees elevate Lagrange as a reliever (he'll be a starter in the minors for now, the team says).
The Yankees designed their 2026 bullpen at the 2025 trade deadline, but still have at least one high-profile vacancy. I'd be stunned if Lagrange isn't intended to fill it sometime in June. But Thursday's rough Weathers in Blue Jays camp, paired with Lagrange's demotion, makes the summer seem so very far away.
