Yankees-Padres trade match just became even stronger after Michael King decision

Everyone has reasons to want this.

New York Yankees fans perked up at this week's news that Michael King declined his player option with the San Diego Padres, making him a free agent. King spent five seasons with the Yankees to begin his MLB career, transitioning into a starting pitcher during the final stages of his last campaign in the Bronx (2023) to considerable success.

Now 31 years old and coming off a strong season in which he made 32 starts for San Diego and excelled in the postseason, King will attract plenty of suitors. But how about a Yankees reunion? Wouldn't it feel good to snatch back some of King's best years as a starter, seeing as he only had the opportunity to really bloom in that role once he'd been traded to San Diego?

Yankees' potential trade offerings make them a great fit for the Michael King-less Padres

Conveniently, the Yankees have precisely what the Padres should be looking for in a trade now that they're positioned to lose King: a package of young, controllable starting pitchers. New York's trio of Ryan Weathers, Will Warren, and Elmer Rodriguez should all be firmly on the trade block if the Yankees are smart, and San Diego has plenty of reason to be calling about all three.

The Padres are short on starting pitchers in a way that goes well beyond King. Four of San Diego's five leaders in innings pitched from 2026 (including King) are entering free agency: Walker Buehler, Griffin Canning, and Adrian Morejon being the others. Furthermore, deadline acquisitions/preseason dart throws Lucas Giolito, Casey Mize, and Robbie Ray are all hitting the open market as well.

In other words, the Padres are facing a huge void in their depth chart, and it's one that a deal with the Yankees could help fill. It would make a lot of sense for San Diego to have interest in Weathers, specifically, seeing as the Padres selected him at No. 7 overall in the 2018 MLB Draft. Surely, they'd be interested in Warren and Rodriguez, too, given Warren's solid MLB sample size and Rodriguez's clear promise. And hey, why not mention Luis Gil during trade discussions if you're the Yankees?

The trade fit gets even better when you realize that the Padres have multiple pieces that could help the Yankees. Right-handed reliever Jeremiah Estrada would be a welcome addition to New York's bullpen in need of depth. Catcher Luis Campusano would be a very interesting piece to add behind Austin Wells (and the Padres already have their catcher of the future in Ethan Salas).

Could the Yankees and Padres fulfill their clear needs by hitting the free-agent market, or doing business with any of the other 28 clubs out there? Of course. But there's way too much "you-have-what-I-need" synergy going on between these two front offices at the moment for a deal not to happen. You'd think they'd realize this within minutes of getting on the phone with each other.
