Occasionally, when Aaron Boone appears on Jomboy Media's Talkin' Yanks podcast, he unloads a laundry list of crucial updates in a torrent that overwhelm the narrative flow of the show. It's been a while since the Yankees had as much up in the air, injury-wise, as they did after flying back home from Dodger Stadium with a win Sunday night, but boy, did Boonie deliver on the details.
While Luke Weaver's unfortunate prognosis came out Monday night, via Jeff Passan, the Yankees announced less about Jasson Domínguez's status. The rookie outfielder was replaced by Cody Bellinger at the plate in the top of the sixth inning after jamming his thumb on a slide.
According to Boone, Domínguez will remain out of the lineup on Tuesday night due to swelling in his thumb, and the injury will be reevaluated by trainers around 11:00 am EST. Not exactly encouraging, considering it was originally called a contusion.
Yankees News: Jasson Domínguez injury return timeline still undecided, Devin Williams to absorb Luke Weaver's closer chances
Boone also announced that, during Weaver's upcoming 4-to-6-week absence, Devin Williams is likely to be given most of the formal closer duties. The Yankees' bullpen can withstand a moderate Weaver absence, especially if it keeps him fresh into October. Jonathan Loaisiga's recent return will look a whole lot sweeter if he can get in a groove, and Mark Leiter Jr. has stepped up in a setup role. Key whiff generator Fernando Cruz is also set to return on Tuesday.
Williams has looked largely brilliant since being demoted from the closer's role, and now the Yankees will get a chance to see whether something's changed in his mentality (and whether his bleak night in Anaheim last week was just an aberration).
Jazz Chisholm returns just in time to help ailing Yankees lineup
Thankfully, when one door closes, another one opens with a flashing smile. Domínguez is out Tuesday, but somehow Jazz Chisholm Jr. is already back! The Yankees' infielder (third baseman now?) will return to the lineup for the series opener against the Cleveland Guardians, according to Boone. Chisholm Jr. suffered a 'severe' oblique strain on April 29, and has already made it back in far less than his six-week prognosis. Quick healer, indeed.
