If the Red Sox are going to be commended for saving money early in their draft to procure big potential bonus babies in Rounds 9 and 10, then the Yankees deserve similar praise for what they appear to have pulled off with Seneca HS star and Ole Miss commit William Cutshall, chosen in the 15th round on Sunday.
Nothing is official until pen is put to paper, of course, but it's hard to feel any better about Cutshall potentially signing than the front office likely did as soon as this story dropped. According to Cutshall's local paper, Upstate Today, the infielder said he would arrive at the Yankees' facility on Tuesday and agree to terms in the coming days.
While things could always technically fall apart from there, Cutshall's bubbling excitement was palpable in every quote he gave. As it turns out, our enthusiasm about Cutshall was not misguided; he officially signed on Wednesday. Quick.
“It’s something I’ve been looking forward to and working toward my whole baseball career,” Cutshall told the Upstate Times on Monday. “It doesn’t really feel real in the moment, and it kind of feels like I’m dreaming, because it’s a dream I’ve had since childhood.
“When I heard my name get called, it was a feeling of, ‘Man, I achieved my dream and my goal I’ve worked toward,’ and that’s just an amazing feeling.”
He had, if possible, even kinder words for the Yankees' organization:
“I can’t put it into words,” he added about being selected by the Yankees. “I know how much history they have behind them and how long they’ve been a ball club. It’s just amazing to be a part of that now, and I’m just ready to go down there and work my butt off to prove them… https://t.co/aEfuCXuzFS

Yankees might've stolen an extra first-round pick in 15th-round choice William Cutshall
Cutshall has been committed to Ole Miss' upcoming class (along with fellow rumored Yankees target, now White Sox draft pick, Cole Prosek) for almost two years, and signed earlier in 2026. Forgoing that commitment clearly wasn't an easy decision, but it seems the Yankees being the team that selected him may have knocked the wall down. Whew. Feels ... feels good to be able to say that about a top prospect who wants to be here again.
The slugging shortstop made Baseball America's Top 500 high school prospects list, owing in large part to his light-tower power.
The expectations pre-draft around Cutshall certainly involved him likely re-entering the pool down the line and maximizing his earning potential, and while the pick seemed like a dart throw at the time of selection, the Yankees might've actually known what they were doing here. We had to cross our fingers as they crossed the T's for about 24 hours, but it appears the Yanks may have selected an enthusiastic participant in their program and a rising star late.
