Comparison is the thief of joy, but one MLB insider's recent Anthony Volpe take is the kind of comp that just about every New York Yankees fan would be happy with.

In a recent column published late last month, Joel Sherman of the New York Post compared Volpe to Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson.

"Volpe, made me wonder about a career path for this kind of player who also offers durability, defense and strong baserunning." Sherman wrote. "And I kept coming back to Dansby Swanson."

This is certainly high praise coming from an insider that has covered the Yankees for quite some time. To put his take in perspective, Swanson is a two-time All-Star, a two-time Gold Glove Award winner, and a World Series champion.

Most, if not all, fans would love to see Volpe win multiple Gold Gloves, make several trips to the Mid-summer Classic, and be part of a championship effort. But, a closer look at who Swanson is as a player offers even more reasons to be a fan of the comparison.

From a baseline perspective, Swanson's availability is typically elite. He has played in more than 140 games in each of the last four seasons, and has been a staple at one of the game's most physically and mentally taxing positions.

Volpe played more than 150 games in both 2023 and 2024. He has continued to be a stable presence, and while it is more than fair to have gripes regarding his inconsistent play, the 24-year-old has at least been able to compete on a daily basis.

Most would argue that Swanson is the better player defensively, but his prowess could come from experience and maturity. It is possible that Volpe will benefit from similar dynamics as his career continues.

At the plate, Swanson and Volpe have similar styles. Neither can be categorized as a pure contact or power bat. So far this season, the two have profiled similarly. In fact, Volpe has been the better in terms of K% and wOBA, according to Baseball Savant.

These marks are particularly important when speaking about the pair. They are each crafty baserunners who can impact games with the way they are able to analyze a given situation and make smart decisions.

Volpe has been a threat to steal bases thus far. He has been more aggressive than Swanson in this regard, and has given the Yankees an interesting advantage that could pay dividends if the club decides to eventually have him serve as a full-time leadoff hitter.

The jury is still out on Volpe's long-term ceiling, but a Swanson-esque evolution would be hard to pass up.
