Yankees Injury Updates: Ryan Weathers downer, Jazz Chisholm optimism, Trent Grisham

The New York Yankees received an Aaron Judge diagnosis that the whole world was hoping to avoid on Friday. Will he be back for the playoffs? Possibly, though the first round is unlikely. Even a Grade 1 calf strain typically requires two or three weeks on the shelf.

If you were hoping to hear from Judge himself for more updates on Friday, tough luck; he didn't speak either before or after the game. But before the Yankees took the field (and battered the Diamondbacks 9-2 on the strength of a comeback start from Gerrit Cole), they delivered a bevy of other updates about core pieces, many of whom will return in the next week.

Ryan Weathers will not be one of them. The left-hander could still play a pivotal role in October, but if he does so, he'll be hitting the mound fresh without any ramp-up in a big league game, much the same way Nestor Cortes Jr. did back in 2024.

Prior to his injury, Weathers was one of the Yankees' most valuable pitchers, striking out 143 men in 137 1/3 innings with a 3.60 ERA. If he appears in the postseason, he'll be doing so as a reliever.

While Judge's return isn't around the corner (and is far from a certainty in general), the Yankees plan to welcome a pair of position players back over the course of the season's final nine days.

As expected, Jazz Chisholm Jr. will be activated during the Tampa Bay Rays series, pending a setback.

As not expected, fans will be split on who should accrue more playing time between Chisholm Jr. and the scorching Anthony Volpe.

Additionally, Trent Grisham is running and may appear in a game before the end of the regular season as well. What seemed like a troublesome exercise now seems somewhat essential; a Grisham, Cody Bellinger, Spencer Jones outfield could be the Yankees' Wild Card reality (unless a left-hander makes Heliot Ramos an essential piece).

Grisham and Chisholm might give the Yankees the boost that Judge was hoping to provide. Thankfully, if Friday night's game was a preview of how the Yankees can respond under duress, that'll mean Ben Rice and Co. might just carry the day for their starting pitchers after all.
