Following a four-hit night in ALDS Game 2, Kansas City Royals infielder Maikel Garcia decided not to heed his own advice, instead attempting to get inside the New York Yankees' heads.
Garcia was less than impressed by Carlos Rodón's first inning shenanigans in the Bronx, as the left-hander wagged his tongue and weaved his way effortlessly through the top of the Royals lineup.
By the time the dust settled in that particular contest, KC had gotten the last laugh -- but not the final laugh.
Don't tell that to Garcia, though, who sprinted to the locker room to chirp on his mobile device immediately after the final out. "Don't celebrate too early!" he quipped, as he searched the emoji keyboard for a skull, struggled to switch back out of the emoji keyboard, started and stopped typing a message in the emoji keyboard repeatedly, then finally restarted his phone out of frustration.
Does anyone ... want to let him know ... that "after Game 2" also qualifies as "early"?
Kansas City Royals player Maikel Garcia trolled the Yankees a little early in the ALDS
Reminding the opposition not to celebrate too soon is a valid ambition, but remember, we must always look inward as we advise others. What are we doing to be our best selves?
In Garcia's case, not quite enough; he went 1-for-7 in the final two games of the Division Series, both losses at home.
But don't worry! He fired off not one, but two iconically ironic tweets in the process. Because he also responded to the big, bad Yankees by letting them know that he "doesn't fear" anyone. Unfortunately, that was proven untrue in Game 4 when he slid into second base trying to chop Anthony Volpe's arm, then was shocked by the fact that he received contact in exchange. Who knew that, if you seek it, you just might find it?
Garcia retreated when confronted, which led to another extremely fun moment of reflection as the confetti settled and champagne pooled in the Yankees' locker room.
Much like the Josh Naylor "Rock the Little F-ing Son" situation in the 2022 ALDS, it's extremely nice when a bit of trash talking boomerangs before a series' final out.
The Yankees have a prime opportunity to keep their AL Central hot streak going in the ALCS, and while the Tigers seem smart and well-put-together, the Guardians appear a little combustible. Who knows? Maybe they'll toss the Yankees a little bit of celebration chum, too.
