From pine tar mysteries to slow trots around the bases, there are so many storylines in a single baseball game that it can be easy to overlook some of the coolest ones. For George Lombard Jr. and Garrett Crochet, their sixth inning matchup in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series offered up a full-circle moment more than six months in the making.
With the New York Yankees sporting a slim one-run lead over the Boston Red Sox in the frame, momentum looked to be swinging in Boston’s favor. When Red Sox manager Chad Tracy decided to bring in Crochet from the bullpen, it seemed like it was their chance to really take control of the game. But after two massive misplays from Adley Rutschman, that opportunity for Boston disintegrated in seconds and it sent the team into disarray.
Lombard Jr. then stepped up to the plate and smoked a 2-2 fastball from Crochet into center field for an RBI single. That hit led to a disastrous snowball effect for the Red Sox and a six-run rally for the Yankees. In the blink of an eye, the Bronx Bombers jumped out to a big lead and ruined Crochet’s first outing since late-April. That rally also overshadowed a poignant moment for the young shortstop as well.
For Lombard Jr. and Crochet, it was not the first time they came face to face in 2026.
George Lombard Jr.’s clutch hit for the Yankees was basically written in the stars
On March 4, the Yankees and the Red Sox faced off in a Spring Training matchup at JetBlue Park at Fenway South in Fort Myers, Florida. With Crochet on the mound, Lombard Jr. clobbered the lefty’s fourth pitch of the game over the team’s Green Monster replica for a solo shot. You could almost say that it foreshadowed the big postseason moment for the Yankees.
While Lombard Jr.’s RBI single in Game 2 wasn’t a home run, it was a superbly clutch base hit that kicked off the Yankees’ crushing blow against their bitter rival. Not only did it eventually lead to eliminating the Red Sox from the postseason, but it also served as a perfect bookend to Lombard Jr.’s season against Crochet.
Crochet came into 2026 as the clear ace of the Red Sox, and there was no reason to believe that he wouldn’t have another dominant year. As the runner up in the 2025 Cy Young Award race, Crochet collected 255 strikeouts in 205.1 innings pitched on his way to a 5.7 fWAR season.
However, it was clear that Crochet was not quite right coming out of spring training. After posting a 6.30 ERA through six starts this season, he was shut down with shoulder inflammation and placed on the IL in April, where he’d remain for the entire regular season. But after rehabbing for months, the lefty willed his way onto the Red Sox postseason roster. It seemed like fate for him to get a chance to face the Yankees.
Crochet’s matchup against Lombard Jr. in Game 2 was a chance for him to bounce back from a trying year and even get his shot at redemption. Instead, he was bettered by the rookie once again and is now forced to ponder his struggles over the course of the entire offseason. But with the two teams doomed to battle each other year after year in the AL East, Crochet and Lombard Jr. will likely face each other many more times.
Only time will tell if history will repeat itself again.
