Yankees finally DFA rotation's weakest link on same day former prospect loses job

The New York Yankees made a very necessary rotation move on Tuesday by DFA'ing Carlos Carrasco. It comes as a slight surprise, given the current thinness of their pitching staff, but anyone who saw Ryan Yarbrough shine in a spot start over the weekend — and Carrasco sputter in long relief — probably isn't shocked that the Yankees thought they'd gotten all they could out of the veteran right-hander.

It seems likely Yarbrough will receive another turn in the rotation, as the fresh arm promoted in Carrasco's place is 40-man reliever Yerry de los Santos.

In another episode of "Former Yankee on Former Yankee Crime," the Los Angeles Dodgers have promoted ex-Bombers farmhand JP Feyereisen, imported ages ago in the 2016 Andrew Miller trade, to beef up their bullpen. The unfortunate casualty? Ex-Yankees top prospect Yoendrys Gómez, who was claimed by the Dodgers just under two weeks ago.

The Yankees initially DFA'd Gómez, a former top-10 prospect in their system, in order to elevate Tyler Matzek from Triple-A. Matzek has struggled in his medium-leverage attempts to climb the Yankees' ladder, but obviously, Gómez didn't quite light the world up, either.

Though the right-hander risked healthy limbs to soak up innings (quite literally) in the sopping wet rain against the Giants a few weeks back, Gómez's metrics indicated that he was "just a guy" at the moment in time he left New York. He currently sports a 4th percentile barrel percentage, and it's no great surprise his ERA normalized a bit after his time in Los Angeles, sitting at 6.28 on the season with a 1.81 WHIP.

The Dodgers entrusted Gómez to do a long man's duty on Monday night in Miami and get a 7-1 lead over the Marlins to the finish line. Unfortunately, he bottomed out, allowing a three-run homer while only recording one out. That got him the boot, and earned Feyereisen another big-league shot.

Yankees could claim Yoendrys Gómez again, if they want to, after the Los Angeles Dodgers DFA'd him

Would Gómez be valuable ... to the Yankees ... after the way their rotation has shaken out in recent weeks? Would they consider stretching him out, or moving Ryan Yarbrough into the five-man unit and replacing his bullpen innings with Gómez instead? Clearly, he made it all the way down the waiver wire to the Dodgers last time around, meaning that a large number of pitching-needy teams passed on him. They'd probably do it again after his audition in LA went south.

The Yankees probably prefer the arms they've got on the 40-man, given that they only carried Gómez out of camp as a matter of necessity when the rest of the world went down. New York would probably rather use de los Santos permanently, in all honesty.
