Yankees finalize trade for thunderous Nationals bat with imperfect defensive fit

UPDATE, per Joel Sherman, 5:17 PM EST: The deal is done. Relievers Ben Grable, Yovanny Cruz, and Jake Bird will flank prospect Jack Cebert in the package.

The New York Yankees are the beneficiary of Sunday's most prominent Hug Watch. Washington Nationals first baseman/DH Luis Garcia Jr. was scratched from his second straight lineup (knee soreness yesterday, nothing credible as an excuse today), then headed down the tunnel when reports emerged that, from a pack that included the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox, the Yankees had developed the most enticing trade package. Per Nationals manager Blake Butera, the scratch on Sunday was explicitly because something, presumably with the Yankees, was close.

The Sox and Nationals have danced plenty this year, with lead Nats exec Paul Toboni coming directly from Craig Breslow's front office, but instead the Yankees are the ones pushing to get this trade closest to the finish line. New York can use offense wherever they can get it, and Garcia's 23 homers, .873 OPS, and 136 OPS+ will play in any lineup, especially one that's this starved for production. He's also under control through 2027, an additional season (um, we hope) in pinstripes.

The only slightly bizarre thing about the match, as fearsome as he will likely be against right-handers (.918 OPS) with the short porch in front of him, is the positional fit. Garcia Jr. played a great deal of second base prior to this season and dabbled at shortstop in his younger days, but this year he's been a first baseman/DH all the way. As Brendan Kuty notes, he would likely push Ben Rice to DH against righties, relegating Paul Goldschmidt to the lefty-only role he was born to play (and probably sitting himself against his fair share of left-handers). Giancarlo Stanton, in this aftermath, remains a non-factor (and a bonus at best).

He's long been horrendous at second base, and likely would not impact Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s role; they share the same platoon proclivities.

Yankees reportedly dangling Top 15 prospect Jack Cebert to Washington Nationals for slugger Luis Garcia Jr.

If the Yankees center their package around Cebert, one of many enticing arms from their 2024-2025 draft cycle who's currently on the Injured List at Somerset, that would be considered a nice win. Rumor has it, per Barstool's Eric Hubbs, the Yankees also plan to include recently promoted reliever Yovanny Cruz in this deal, if it progresses as expected. A Garcia trade would also only be considered part of the total plan. After all, Garcia would be a part-time bat and would theoretically block both Stanton and Aaron Judge from taking DH reps down the stretch.

You know what? Come to think of it, that may be the point. Let's see them finish the deal, then move some additional parts around.
