He's BACK!

Yankees fans love to wonder what might happen if The Boss, George Steinbrenner, were still alive -- especially as their offseason hangs in the balance.

Luckily, thanks to the fine people at Topps and the legendary Larry David, we once again have some idea of what Steinbrenner's been up to. Unfortunately, in the commercial Topps posted this week, he's not berating his son Hal and raising the Yankees' budget by 10s of millions. Instead, we were gifted a flashback featuring David as Steinbrenner pushing the Yankees to draft legendary quarterback John Elway over Tony Gwynn back in 1981.

For those who don't know, this actually was a real conundrum. The Yankees took Elway out of Stanford in the second round, six spots ahead of Gwynn heading to San Diego.

Ultimately, it turned out to be a football leverage play, and after spending a summer in Oneonta ripping curveballs, Elway eventually settled on the fate that history had in mind for him, tormenting Cleveland en route to his forever home in Canton.

What would Elway's baseball career have looked like? We'll never know, but thanks to Topps, we can finally collect accordingly -- the quarterback's "Dream Draft Picks" signed "Rookie Card" will be available as a chase option in 2024 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects.

Elway follows in Tom Brady's footsteps here; the once-upon-a-time Montreal Expos draftee appeared in the prospect-heavy product last year, and his cards predictably commanded a pretty penny.

If you'd like to get your hand on Elway in a Yankees jersey this winter, it won't be as easy as it was for David/Steinbrenner, who simply had to boss his lackeys around until they acquiesced to his wishes.

Steinbrenner may have made the wrong call back in '81, but David sure didn't, showing up reprising his much-beloved "Seinfeld" role just when Yankee fans needed to see him most. Famously a Jets fan, it's likely David didn't have much going on this fall, and was able to fit it into his schedule.

Besides, as a great man once said, "It's calzone time!"
