Thanks to self-inflicted wound after self-inflicted wound, the New York Yankees were hanging on to a playoff spot by their fingernails just about a week and a half ago. Despite what Brian Cashman says publicly, the seat on which manager Aaron Boone sits was getting hotter and hotter with each passing day.

Things have cooled off a bit, but it's only a matter of time before that topic of conversation dominates the headlines once again.

From questionable bullpen decisions to baserunning blunders to fielding gaffes, Boone has either been the root cause of so many avoidable Yankees issues or at least has served as the enabler. If the organization hasn't had enough, fans have. Shortly after Old-Timers' Day, they took to social media to beg for one legend of the past to take over at the helm.

Yankees fans are begging for Jorge Posada to take over as the club's next manager

During August 9's Old-Timers' Day festivities, Yankees legend and Core Four member Jorge Posada had some strong words regarding what exactly the Yankees need to snap out of their funk.

"They just gotta get a little angry, hopefully a fight or something that happens, not a fight but something that happens to get them going. They need to have that chip on their shoulder. You've gotta play like that. You can't be friends with everybody," Posada told SNY.

That's a pretty stark departure from Boone's laid-back, "everything's going to be okay" attitude. And it's exactly what fans have been clamoring for. The Bleacher Creatures are fed up with lackadaisical play that has no consequences, and Posada is exactly the man who could bring about such a change.

During his playing days, Posada was known for going out there every night with an edge — a simmering intensity at all times ready to boil over. It was this quality, along with spectacular baseball talent, that made him an integral part of the last Yankees dynasty.

Apart from his fiery disposition, there's another reason why Posada might make a great manager. Many of the game's greats, such as Joe Torre, Jim Leyland, Mike Scioscia, and Bruce Bochy, among many others, were catchers during their playing days, just like Posada.

While there's no direct evidence that former catchers make for better MLB managers, the nature of the role gives them a unique insight into both pitching and hitting that no other position can match. Dealing intimately with game calling and managing pitchers' psyches gives them an eye for handling pitchers that is comparable to that of a pitching coach, while they also possess a knowledge of hitting that coaches who played other positions understand.

Lastly, Posada would give Yankee fans a nostalgia factor. With five World Series rings, Posada knows how to win, and, should it come to fruition, his presence in the dugout would bring fans back to a simpler time when the Yankees were unquestioned World Series favorites year in and year out.
