The one cringey aspect of every MLB offseason features fans, pundits and outlets randomly linking notable names to contending rosters. It happens every year with the New York Yankees, and it quite honestly gets worse and worse.
Have a need at X position? How about the most obvious free agency/trade fits you could have ever imagined, regardless of price or fit?! Let's do it!
Yankees fans are obviously open to anything and everything because of Brian Cashman's inability to establish a consistent track record with his trades and signings, but don't forget there's a lot to be thankful for in regard to the deals he doesn't make.
Take, for example, MLB.com's latest trade proposal involving the Yankees. Anthony Castrovince, like many other tweens, are mocking Luis Robert-to-New York in one of the most baseline (and wasteful) pairings.
How often have the Yankees been criticized for importing expensive, underwhelming veterans since 2017? It feels like an annual story, but that hasn't stopped others from trying to keep the narrative rolling.
Castrovince has Robert and No. 22 White Sox prospect Jake Eder (left-handed pitcher) heading to the Bronx in exchange for the Yankees' top prospect in Jasson Dominguez. And to that we say ... no, emphatically.
No thank you to Luis Robert Jr. for Jasson Dominguez trades! Thank you, Yankees.
Robert has had two healthy campaigns, and that's counting the shortened 60-game 2020 season. Other than that, he's been constantly injured (2021, 2022, 2024) and has watched his strikeout totals pile up (he reached a 33.2% rate in 2024). Yes, the Yankees "need" a center fielder, but they don't need an unreliable one with a high ceiling that feels more imaginative than real.
More importantly, Robert is signed through 2025 at $15 million. He has $20 million club options for 2026 and 2027, but in what world is that appealing? The Yankees get untapped star power here and nothing else. They would pay the premium both via trade and salary and simply hope for the best.
It would represent another money dump, too. Remember, the Yankees gave Dominguez a record $5.1 million signing bonus during the 2019-2020 international signing period. So they'd give away all that team control of Dominguez, flush their $5 million down the drain, and pray Robert doesn't become another sunk cost.
Also ... why are we giving up on Dominguez already? Why would the Yankees trade him when his value is lowest? He's coming off major surgery and was once again jerked around by the organization that famously jerks around their top prospects. This would be the definition of bad business, and we'd argue it might not even make the Yankees better. It has a greater chance of blowing up in their face than succeeding.
Take the Roberts and Cody Bellingers out of your trade proposals and let's think more creatively ... because things already feel bleak as the Juan Soto sweepstakes lag on.
