Yankees fans hoping David Ortiz's arrogant Rafael Devers post further divides Red Sox

While it's infuriating the New York Yankees are 1-5 against a bad Boston Red Sox team in 2025, Bronx Bombers fans are at least getting joy out of their chief rivals once again shooting themselves in the foot with a superstar homegrown talent. It's getting even better the more David Ortiz gets involved.

Rafael Devers was traded to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday right after the Sox swept the Yankees and all hell broke loose. Even if there was something to be said about Boston getting rid of the remaining $235 million on Devers' contract, in no world was that a productive deal for a big market team. The Red Sox should be contending year in and year out with marquee names — not trading two of the best hitters in the sport for pennies on the dollar within five years of one another.

Ortiz, however, doesn't see it that way. For whatever reason, he thinks the highest-paid player on the roster who was dubbed the starting third baseman should've been totally fine with being disrespected by the very team that rewarded him as the franchise star.

It's understandable why the Red Sox might've grown frustrated with Devers. Reports suggesting he wasn't a "leader" and the fact he refused to commit to off-the-field events or even regular postgame interviews definitely isn't what you want from a guy you gave $300 million to. But the Sox also blindsided him by signing another star third baseman (only for one year, mind you), abruptly told him he wasn't going to play defense anymore, and then asked him to play first base at the first sign of infield depth issues when Triston Casas suffered an injury. How is that going to have either party acquiesce?

Ortiz has called out Devers multiple times on social media the last few days, but his latest Instagram post is hands down the most arrogant piece of corporate kowtowing any baseball fan has ever seen.

The Hall of Famer posted a picture of himself at Fenway Park with the caption: "Best organization in baseball. The thing is that to have some like this at Boston you have to just not be a hitter you have to be the full package a all around player ... go Sox."

The problem with what Ortiz is saying is that ... the Red Sox took away Devers' ability to "be the full package" when Alex Cora reportedly told the slugger to Devers to "throw his glove away." The other problem with Ortiz saying that? He logged -21.2 dWAR throughout his career. Even if Devers tried to be that bad at a harder position, he couldn't do it. Ortiz also logged on 278 games at first base throughout his career! Is this guy crazy?

What's great about all of this is that Ortiz is a franchise icon. He's the face of the Red Sox breaking the curse and starting an historic quarter-century run. And now he's delivering a contrarian opinion that is clearly in the corporate interests of the franchise as John Henry and Co. hope to avoid looking as bad as they possibly can.

Let the Red Sox fan infighting begin. We'll let you guys tear yourselves apart before you inevitably wipe the field clean with the Yankees once August arrives.
