Just astoundingly tone deaf. That's the only way to describe the Boston Red Sox executives' latest meltdown. From a New York Yankees fan's perspective, there's a lot to complain about while watching our front office, but at least they aren't this vocally incompetent.
Last season, we watched how the Red Sox took an uncomfortable situation with the supposed face of the franchise, Rafael Devers, and threw gasoline all over it. They could have made it work with Devers and Bregman if they had chosen to communicate first, and had treated Devers with the respect his massive contract (that they gave him) signified that he deserved.
After painting themselves into a corner, they traded him for pennies on the dollar. Less than a year later, Bregman is gone, and so too are nearly all the pieces they got back from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for Devers.
Boston's brass had egg on their face after Bregman bolted for the Chicago Cubs this winter, but if they had just kept their mouths shut, their shame cloud would have eventually dissipated. Instead, they opened up spring training by dramatically sticking their foot straight into their mouth.
Red Sox executives Sam Kennedy and Tom Werner stunningly embarrass themselves with unnecessary Alex Bregman comments, and Yankees fans can't help but laugh
Whenever a star player departs in the offseason, the front office will be asked about it once spring training is underway. Most executives give banal platitudes, wish their former player the best, and say that they're focused on the guys who are still present. Red Sox chairperson Tom Werner and president Sam Kennedy must have missed that day in Public Relations 101.
Werner went out on a limb to speculate why Bregman would have chosen Chicago over Boston, as if it wasn't obvious that more money and the ability to control his future via a no-trade clause had swayed him towards the Windy City.
“I don’t think that it was simply about the fact that he was offered a bit more money in Chicago. I think that he’s happy to be in Arizona [for spring training], where his family is. I have enormous respect for Alex, but it wasn’t meant to be, and we moved on… I think people have made too much of that. I don’t think that was the dispositive issue,” Werner said.
When asked about losing Bregman and the various pivots the Red Sox had to make, Kennedy had the following to say: "We're so grateful to Alex, and what he meant to us, but, look in the end when you have choices the way he did, you work really hard to be in a position to become a free agent and perform at that level. He chose a different path, and we wish him well, and we'll be looking forward to seeing him at the end of the season if and when."
All well and good, but then, when asked about the Red Sox's policy against handing out no-trade clauses and its effect on retaining Bregman, Kennedy made a fool of himself.
"No. Look if Alex Bregman wanted to be here, ultimately he'd be here."
Come on, man! You blew up your team for this guy, and now you think he never wanted to be there to begin with? That's just disingenuous. You landed Bregman a year ago because you gave him the best shot to cash in, and that's exactly what he did. If you gave him what he wanted, he'd still be a Red Sox today.
Just switch to the Yankees T. Much more ethical

Red Sox fans are understandably up in arms, but over here, we can only help but laugh. Not only are they incompetent, but they have zero self-awareness as well. It seems like only a matter of time until this Red Sox regime gets itself into yet another pickle, and we can't wait.
