Good news: The New York Yankees watched Tuesday's bullpen implosion against the Toronto Blue Jays and were just as disgusted as you were, taking immediate action to correct the problem.
Bad news: They probably DFA'd the wrong guy - or, rather, the right guy, but not enough guys.
After the Jays gave the Yanks the ultimate Canada Day gift with some horrific game-tying defense, the Yankees brought it directly to the returns department and cashed it in for store credit. Within the blink of an eye, the game was untied; a worn-ragged Mark Leiter Jr. retired the first batter of the frame, then let the next two reach, before JC Escarra undid a crucial Luke Weaver strikeout with a catcher's interference. Anthony Volpe flubbed a dive, George Springer hit a grand slam, and the Yankees bullpen once again smeared Tiramisu all over a carpeted floor.
Once the game was nearly out of reach - ok, fine, it was very much out of reach, considering these guys don't even punch back at a one-run deficit these days - recent call-up Geoff Hartlieb was called upon to hold Toronto right where they were and soak up the spilled cinnamon. It was a nice moment for a veteran who'd fought from spring training forward to make an impression. He was celebrated by the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders Twitter account. He was asked to mop up, and if he performed well enough, he might get a medium-leverage opportunity somewhere down the line.
And, well ... he couldn't even finish the game. He covered the final out of the seventh, allowed three runs in the eighth, walked a trio, and handed the ball to the old mop-up man JT Brubaker to close the book. Man ... this, uh ... this team has a lot of mop-up men.
As soon as it began, Hartlieb's Yankees career was over; he was DFA'd on Wednesday in favor of Clayton Beeter, who fans have been clamoring for for quite a while.
Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
— New York Yankees (@Yankees) July 2, 2025
• Recalled RHP Clayton Beeter (#29) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
• Designated RHP Geoff Hartlieb for assignment.
Yankees DFA Geoff Hartlieb, recall Clayton Beeter after Tuesday debacle vs. Blue Jays
Side note, remember when we kind of just ... had Adam Ottavino on retainer earlier in the season? Can we bring that back?
The 26-year-old Beeter has struggled to stay healthy these past few seasons in the Yankees' farm, but absolutely deserves another big-league chance after striking out 35 men in 21 innings this season while maintaining a 2.14 ERA. He might be tossed immediately to George Springer and the rest of the wolves this week, given the state of the Yankees' bullpen around him.
As for Hartlieb, the Yankees used enough time tweaking his arsenal that they'd surely like him to return to Scranton, but they probably won't be so lucky. He's too viable.
