Yankees' defensive collapse vs Blue Jays has fans calling for next DFA

And raging against Anthony Volpe!

The trade deadline will hopefully have this New York Yankees team looking very different. Will they make impact acquisitions to make a World Series run? Maybe! But even if they don't, there's no feasible way this team can employ 20% of the players they currently do on the 40-man roster.

And that includes Oswald Peraza, who hasn't been a viable big league player for over a year now, but the Yankees have opted to let this reach the worst possible juncture. Peraza's routine error on Monday night against the Toronto Blue Jays should solidify his soon-to-be DFA.

With the Yankees trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Carlos Rodón needed just one out to escape the jam and limit further damage (he had already relinquished the Yankees' 1-0 lead by surrendering two earned runs).

He did his job. He induced as routine of a ground ball as possible. Myles Straw bounced one to Peraza, who fielded the ball cleanly, clutched, and then absolutely yanked the throw. It got away from Paul Goldschmidt and a run scored. Instead of the inning being over, the Blue Jays now led 3-1, and their social media team threw a dig in there.

Peraza is quite literally in there for his defense, something the Yankees made clear with the 25-year-old batting .147 across 66 games. The fact he's even getting playing time means the team is asking him solely to be sure-handed with the glove while not caring a lick what he does with the bat.

So, after his fifth error on the year, what's the point of him being here?

We'll answer that for you! There is no point. There hasn't been a point ever since the Yankees shunned Peraza in favor of Volpe during the spring training heading into the 2023 season. And speaking of Volpe, he made an error on the next play!

That made it 4-1, and at that point fans knew it was time to pack it in. The Yankees have been getting buzzsawed by Kevin Gausman and are about to drop yet another game to a division opponent (against whom they are below .500 in 2025). They do not come to play for these contests, even though they matter exponentially more when it comes to the division race.

Let us guess ... the Yankees don't care. They'll just be fine "making the playoffs." Seeding be damned. That's never helped anybody before.

How about one more frustrating Peraza/Volpe tidbit before you go? A Blue Jays fan kindly reminded Yankees fans that Brian Cashman didn't trade Peraza or Volpe for Matt Olson, instead opting to sign Anthony Rizzo and hang on to two below-average MLB players when they could have parted with at least one to get promising value in return.

Yet everybody seems to think Cashman is going to blow up this trade deadline with blockbusters left and right. Do you even live on this planet? Even if he got the deal of a lifetime for Spencer Jones on his current heater, we'd bet Cashman would find a way to stand pat and convince fans it was the right move.

Fans have been asking for the bare minimum: an upgrade over Peraza and some days off for Volpe. And they can't even get that. For everyone out there who was convinced this team was "back" after beating up on the lowly Braves, we've got a bridge to sell you.
