The New York Yankees finally scored some runs, but they couldn't translate the minimal offensive output into a win on Wednesday night, losing 3-2 in what was another heartbreaker. They lost their four-game series to the LA Angels before Thursday's contest even took place.
And if you wanted the Anthony Volpe vitriol to calm down ... you're out of luck. In a game full of mistakes, miscues and failures, the Yankees starting shortstop stood above the rest.
Not only did he go 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, but he made two errors on a single play in the top of the eighth inning to give the Angels the lead. Though Aaron Boone's bullpen management was shoddy yet again, he made the right call bringing in Tim Hill to induce a double-play ball with the bases loaded in that frame.
Hill did just that. But Volpe booted the routine grounder because he didn't come in on it, and then he panicked, completely missing second baseman Oswald Peraza with the throw. Yankee Stadium erupted in boos and you bet the conversations on social media are getting uglier.

Yankee Stadium tears Anthony Volpe to shreds after another loss to Angels
On Monday night, Volpe went 0-for-4 with a strikeout, including the game-ending groundout with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th with New York down by one. Yankees Twitter absolutely lost their minds, and unfortunately the depths of the internet were validated with Volpe's even worse performance on Wednesday night.
He swing through two center cut Kenley Jansen pitches in the zone at 94 MPH. At that point, everybody knew it was over. Jansen had Volpe right where he wanted him, and he got him to strike out with a runner on first to end the game. It's the Yankees' sixth straight loss. They are 2-6 over their last eight games and have scored just 13 runs over that span.
It's incredibly unlucky for Volpe that it's come down to him in such meaningful spots, especially since the Yankees scored zero runs and went 1-for-18 with RISP on Monday night and then logged three hits and went 0-for-3 with RISP on Wednesday. But when the games are this tight, there's no margin for error and somebody needs to come through.
Volpe has largely struggled in that type of spotlight, and fans have never been more impatient with the former first-round draft pick. All the Yankees can do is hope that this offensive slumber ends soon so the discourse can shift, but we're staring down the barrel of another June swoon and it's unclear who's at fault for the fifth year in a row.
