Wild Jasson Dominguez rumor surfaces and Yankees fans are losing their minds

We seriously cannot detect if this is real or not.

Jasson Dominguez has been a hot topic this offseason ever since the New York Yankees gave the qualifying offer to Trent Grisham and he surprisingly accepted. That created the same exact outfield logjam from 2025, assuming Cody Bellinger was set to return. And he did.

So what are the Yankees to do with Dominguez? Trading him really doesn't seem like a smart option given how low his value is, alongside the fact his potential is far from realized as a 22-year-old. You want to move him for ... a reliever? Teams are not surrendering real assets for him with his defensive woes.

The next worst scenario? Starting him at Triple-A when the 2026 season begins. And that's currently a rumor aggressively making its rounds on social media. Yankees fans are up in arms ... but we have no idea if it's true.

@theyanksonly Twitter account cited Jon Heyman when relaying that Dominguez is "likely to open the 2026 season in Triple-A with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre". It has been quote-tweeted and referenced by countless Yankees fans, who are nothing but enraged, claiming the team is ruining his development and have once again wasted another top prospect they managed to overhype for years.

However, a quick deep dive into Heyman's recent articles and TV appearances/live streams reveal no evidence of him making such comments. He's yet to say anything on social media to debunk it, but that's perhaps because it unexpectedly occurred on Thursday evening and didn't gain steam until the week hours of the night.

This all intersects with recent commentary from YES Network's Jack Curry and manager Aaron Boone. Curry said on last week's Yankees Hot Stove episode that the team remains engaged in trade discussions for pitching but "Dominguez and Spencer Jones won't be traded for the sake of being traded with Bellinger's return."

As for Boone, he appeared on The Michael Kay Show as well as WFAN, claiming Dominguez indeed has a spot on the MLB roster given he just appeared in 120+ games with the exact same group in 2025. Fans thought they had heard otherwise, though, mainly because the hear what they want to hear, and Kay himself wondered (via his own perspective) if Dominguez should be traded or sent to Triple-A.

Will Jasson Dominguez start 2026 MLB season with Yankees or in Triple-A?

As we noted, that could indeed be a smokescreen if the Yankees have other behind-the-scenes plans to handle Dominguez before dropping the bomb on fans. But for now we'll listen to what we're being told, which is essentially that Dominguez will be the fourth outfielder and will have a chance to prove himself as a righty hitter. Dominguez, despite being a natural righty hitter, is better from the left side of the plate, and that's become a problem as the Yankees have become too lefty heavy.

Everybody can acknowledge that his defense is a major problem. Left field clearly is a position he cannot handle, especially at Yankee Stadium, but perhaps he needs another chance to prove himself? Not all rookies immediately bust out of the gate and light the league on fire, even though we were told Dominguez would likely do just that.

The problem is that injuries have changed the trajectory of the start of his MLB career. Not to mention, the Yankees have spent the last two years creating roster roadblocks for him at the major league level. Yes, he could have done a better job at proving himself in 2025, but it was his first full campaign with the team, he didn't exactly receive consistent playing time, and the Yankees took his natural position of center field away from him.

Flag us down if you see where Heyman said Dominguez would be starting the year at Triple-A. We wouldn't doubt that's a possibility, given how the Yankees have irresponsibly handled their top prospects in recent years, but there's also been no smoking gun to suggest this will happen.
