When the New York Yankees brought Trent Grisham back via the qualifying offer, there was much consternation over whether or not they had gotten fooled by a career year that was far beyond his career norms. As the month of April wrapped up, and Grisham sat there with a .151/.298/.312 line, the pitchforks were out and fans were demanding answers from Brian Cashman.
But even then, some of us knew what was up. We saw what the underlying data suggested, and what it meant for his hopelessly underwhelming results. We knew that the clutch performances foreshadowed an eventual change in luck.
To some, Grisham's play was still below expectations, except in the most pressure-packed situations. In reality, it may have been a signal of what was to come.
Over his last 15 games, Trent Grisham has been on fire. The 29-year-old, who had been a punching bag for a large swath of the fanbase, is hitting .375 with a 1.016 OPS, both of which lead all Yankees hitters over that time period.
Trent Grisham's luck turning around couldn't have come at a better time for Yankees
The Yankees' lineup is going to need all the help it can get with Aaron Judge on the IL for the foreseeable future, so having guys step up is the only way that they are going to survive the three-time MVP's absence. Grisham flying high right now doesn't close the entire gap, but it certainly helps fill in some of the holes that losing the game's best hitter inevitably brings.
This is about more than just seeing him catch a hot streak, however. Plenty of players have streaks that make you raise your eyebrows and then fall off just as quickly as they rose to the top. That's not what's happening here.
What a lot of folks missed was that the turnaround really began on May 1. In the month of May, the oft-criticized outfielder hit .263/.355/.442. That compares pretty favorably to his .235/.348/.464 performance in 2025.
With that context added, this isn't just dumb luck. This is the luck pendulum swinging in the other direction, balancing out his poor start and proving that Grisham's May performance (and 2025 as a whole) is where his true talent level currently resides.
New York is fortunate that he escaped the knee injury scare from a couple of weeks ago unscathed. The team is also really lucky that he's red hot at the best possible time. We'll hope that the heater lasts as long as possible, but we'll also rest assured that even when it inevitably comes to an end, Grisham is a quality player who will help the Yankees survive a dire situation.
