New York Yankees fans reacted with shock on Wednesday when MLB.com's Bryan Hoch announced that the Yankees were officially approved for an alternate uniform.
Hoch's tweet arrived mere hours after The Athletic's Brendan Kuty reported that Yankees players had been pushing to wear their navy blue batting practice uniform tops as regular-season alternates.
Once Hoch announced the approval, it appeared that everything had come together on an impossibly fast timeline, as if Aaron Judge had called Hal Steinbrenner directly, who then looped in the league office on a Zoom and voila ... done deal.
That's not at all what happened. It turns out the Yankees' blue alternates were approved over a year ago, before the 2025 season. Hoch revealed this fact within an hour of his initial post, but social media had already run with its own narrative by then. The damage was done, the misunderstanding in full bloom.

The Yankees will wear blue alternates in 2026 ... but do they kind of stink?
Ok, so the uniforms have been approved for over a year now, and while they haven't been worn yet, that sounds like it's about to change. But ... should it? There are plenty of different opinions on that matter, and it's only natural to begin with Yankees players themselves. Both Giancarlo Stanton and Judge appear to be fully on board with the batting practice alts.
Stanton outright said he wants to wear the BP tops in games, and he also suggested that the Yankees should design a City Connect (don't get your hopes up). Judge channelled his inner Charlie Conway and decided to throw shade at the entire idea of sponsor-laden uniforms: "I’m all about tradition, but we’ve got a (Starr insurance) patch on our sleeves,” the MVP declared.
Touché. But are these blue BP tops really the best version of a Yankees alternate that we can all imagine? Surely, there is plenty of room for improvement (see below), especially given the Yankees' rich history and all of the resulting aesthetic themes to draw from.
These are easily the best possible alternates they would sell like crazy https://t.co/2cFTlfN0zX

Winning cures all ills (and makes mediocre Yankees uniforms look amazing)
Despite the Yankees falling far short of their ceiling with these alternate uniforms, the BP alts will absolutely be a banger if the Yanks win games in dramatic fashion while sporting them. Maybe these uniforms will have the power to transform, much like the Boston Red Sox's Fenway greens. If Anthony Volpe miraculously fulfills his rookie-year potential and starts raking in the alt blues upon his return? If Luis Gil has a good start in the blues against any team other than the Red Sox? Keep them in the rotation, baby!
Thankfully, Judge did suggest that the Yanks will continue to only wear pinstripes at home (not doing so would be sacrilegious, let's be honest). Between the beard policy upheaval last season and this new development, traditionalists are fuming. But the Yankees are in first place right now, so it's not that bad.
