Timing couldn't be more perfect for Jasson Dominguez after Giancarlo Stanton's injury

It's quite possible the New York Yankees' plan for Jasson Dominguez was the correct one. The youngster has gotten everyday reps at Triple-A and managed to respond to the demotion by improving his areas of concern.

His defense has looked better, and he hasn't had any egregious lowlights since the first series of the year. Overall, he's hitting .306 with an .875 OPS, numbers that were much stronger right before his recent 2-for-13 stretch the last three games.

Nonetheless, he's remained consistent and delivered in the clutch multiple times. If there was ever a time to reward him for respectable play, it's right now (assuming Giancarlo Stanton has to miss time or the Yankees prefer to proceed with caution).

Additionally, the Yankees are facing five straight right-handed starters over their next five games, which leans right into Dominguez's best asset — hitting from the left side of the plate. It's all varying degrees of competition, too.

The Astros will throw Mike Burrows and Spencer Arrighetti the next two days while the Rangers will up the ante with Jack Leiter, Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi. The confidence Dominguez can gain by recording tough at-bats against these guys would be invaluable.

Will Jasson Dominguez get promoted to MLB if Yankees place Giancarlo Stanton on IL?

It couldn't line up any better if the team is forced to make a move. This allows Boone to work in a nice rotation with Dominguez, Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt and maximize playing time for the trio. Fans have been frustrated with Boone giving the nod to Goldschmidt over Rice pretty frequently in the early going, so the flexibility of the DH spot potentially being open could fix that.

At the moment, Stanton is day-to-day and doesn't have any scheduled tests after experiencing tightness in his right calf on Friday night. The Yankees might just give him the next couple days off and see how he's feeling on Monday, so a roster move may not be required.

But as Yankees fans have learned, whenever Stanton suffers from lower body ailments, the timeline is always longer than expected. "Day-to-day" could easily turn into a 10-day injured list stint. We've seen a 10-day injured list stint grow to three weeks. The unpredictability with Stanton's health has made things a bit complicated in the past, but this time the Yankees have plentiful depth to absorb his absence, with little worry about an extended one.

Dominguez represents the next in line — a talented 23-year-old who played in 123 games last season and held his own at the plate despite experiencing growing pains. A renewed Dominguez potentially getting a chance to shine against a favorable line of pitchers would do wonders for both parties if the Stanton situation takes an unfavorable turn.
