Social media peddled ridiculous Yankees trade scenario that looks even dumber now

Stop it. Get help.

Are some Yankees fans on social media annoying? Of course. There is a certain level of entitlement that doesn't exist among other baseball fandoms, but let's not pretend that there isn't a reason for that or the fact that plenty of nonsense is spewed from other baseball supporters. That's the way of life on the internet.

But we will say, Yankees fans went too far with this trade proposal from about a month and a half ago when they started demanding Brian Cashman call the Astros about MVP candidate Yordan Álvarez. On the flip side, it's not like it came out of nowhere. The topic was discussed on MLB Network a week prior when the Astros were spiraling.

Even if Álvarez were available, though, there's just no way this would've ever happened. The Yankees do not have room for another DH, first and foremost. Secondly, Cashman famously does not trade for these types of players. He doesn't like to give up the farm system capital it would require. And finally, why would the Astros do this? They have zero reason to help out one of their hated rivals, especially to this degree.

And for anybody out there crazy enough to think there's a way to get Giancarlo Stanton off this roster? Think again! He is not going anywhere until the day his contract expires. Nobody is trading for him. Nobody wants him. And if the Yankees had any shot of getting rid of him, they would have to eat money, and they hate doing that too.

Yankees-Yordan Álvarez trade buzz was nothing but a dream for delusional fans

Here we are on June 24, and the Astros are doing just fine. They might not be in a playoff spot. They might be dealing with a ton of injuries and a subpar pitching staff. But they are only 3.5 games out of the AL West lead because that's how bad the competition is out there. As long as they remain afloat and make moderate trade deadline additions, they are in as good of shape as anybody.

With the expanded playoff field, unless you start the season 10-50, no fringe team is determining whether they will buy or sell until a week before the trade deadline. So to think the Astros were considering this in early May is absolutely deranged.

And finally, the Yankees need a catcher and bullpen help. If they were to acquire a bat, it'd be a right-handed thumper. There's a world in which you throw caution to the wind if Álvarez became available and a deal was realistic, but that's not a world we are living in.

Keep looking at setup relief options and right-handed hitting catchers. That's where Cashman's focus will be. And if he makes a massive splash? Tarik Skubal could be an option, but we wouldn't bet on it.
