Scout's Giancarlo Stanton assessment shouldn't have Yankees fans holding their breath

It has been quite some time since New York Yankees fans saw Giancarlo Stanton in action. The slugger last played on Apr. 24 of this season after suffering multiple calf strains in the past several months.

Stanton's latest setback came in the form of a moderate-grade left calf strain, which occurred during a running drill in late August while rehabbing from a right calf strain. As a result, Stanton's return this season is now in jeopardy. However, there was recently a glimmer of hope that emerged regarding his status.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Sunday that Stanton has been hitting and hasn't been ruled out for the season yet. Still, a return for Stanton seems unlikely given where we are on the baseball calendar in September. The 36-year-old is running out of time to make it back, even for the postseason.

And speaking of running, Stanton will have to be able to do so in order to make it back to the Yankees' roster this year. This is no sure thing for the 17-year veteran power-hitter based on how his last running program went.

Due to how much time Stanton has missed, it remains to be seen whether he could provide production for the Yankees' offense even if he does return. Then again, the Yankees would gladly take Stanton's bat assisting them in the playoffs in any capacity.

One National League scout spoke with FanSided about Stanton and whether he could benefit the Yankees' lineup if he comes back in 2026.

"Yeah, (Stanton's) a playoff performer," the scout said. "Not sure how (a return) is possible, though."

And that's where the doubt lies with Stanton. It's not in the performance; it's the unrealistic path to making it back from the IL before the season ends. For now, the Yankees aren't ruling it out, but the chances appear to be very slim.

Stanton essentially carried the Yankees to the World Series in 2024, slugging seven homers, driving in 16 RBI and slashing .273/.339/.709 with a 1.048 OPS in 14 games that October. He also earned ALCS MVP honors when the Yankees beat the Cleveland Guardians in five games.

If he can somehow make it back for the postseason, the Yankees' World Series odds will likely increase with his presence. However, there's just no way they can count on that given how unpredictable his status has been since late April.
