Rising Yankees infield prospect finally returns from mysterious injury with authority

While we still have no idea what went on with 2025 New York Yankees top pick Dax Kilby for the first two-thirds of the year, the mysterious (recurring) issue does appear to finally be behind us. All of us. The collective prospect-watchers who desired a breakout received their first blessed inkling over the weekend.

Kilby, who put up some of the most ridiculous data out of any pro debut last summer, was slated to be a Top 100 riser this season in his first full year in the Yankees' system. Instead, the most love he's gotten has come from FanGraphs' very generous inclusion of a special injury section, ranking him No. 107 with a bandaid.

Kilby was shut down with a hamstring issue coming out of spring training and placed on the seven-day injured list, terminology that can mean a prospect will miss a week or the next eight years. At the end of April, he was still battling it. By the end of May, he was shipped out on his first Florida Complex League rehab assignment ... only for that news to lead nowhere, quietly shut down once again after a false start.

Kilby finally rose from short-season ball back to Low-A Tampa in mid-July, activated from the IL on July 24 after some stop-and-go rehab games, some of which featured only a few innings. Thankfully, the restrictions appear to really be off this time; Kilby played a full game in his return, walking twice and recording a double and RBI.

The next day, he socked a home run left-on-left — the first of his career! — against Brandon Clarke, the side-slinging, 103 MPH-throwing former Red Sox top prospect who was dealt for Sonny Gray last winter.

For good measure, Kilby capped the weekend off with another hit on Sunday.

Kilby showed enough in his teeny tiny 18-game sample last summer to be borderline untouchable alongside George Lombard Jr. at this year's trade deadline. Given his status as mostly a myth prior to the weekend, the Yankees would have to consider using him as the centerpiece in the right deal, but ... unless something life-changing is out there, it's better to keep him a well-kept secret (and major piece of the future internally) for now.

May we all continue to receive positive updates from the farm on Kilby rather than word that whatever's seemingly behind him now has returned. The world is way better when he's homering left-on-left. Though he may have to wait until 2027 to join the Hudson Valley Renegades, it still seems that his ascendant career path is back on the tracks.
