On Wednesday night, the Boston Red Sox set out to inch over .500 with a series sweep against the playoff-bound New York Mets. A win would've represented a step forward in their moribund season to date, but nothing more. Apparently, to a vocal segment of the boorish fanbase, the game was life and death, and anyone who had a hand in its unraveling deserved to be thrashed and threatened.

Social media has connected fans to athletes in unprecedented ways, empowering keyboard warriors of all ages to spit venom directly to players' inboxes whenever they lose, step away, or win too brashly. Occasionally, the increased connectivity can be a boon. Usually, it's a scourge. And while Yankees fans usually get painted as the only villainous fanbase and famed group that puts undue pressure on the home team with familiar choruses of boos and vitriol, the reality is that most baseball fans are aggrieved and way too comfortable these days — from the comfort of their own home, of course.

Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks became the latest victim of Boston fans' entitled venom Wednesday night after he struck out the final two batters of the sixth inning in a tie game, then loaded the bases on three singles in the top of the seventh before being removed. Lefty Brennan Bernardino then surrendered all three of Hendriks' runs. In the postgame, the right-hander questioned his role, stating, "If the theory is you want the best of me, throw me."

Boston gave Hendriks a theoretical soft place to land after he returned from cancer treatments with the White Sox in 2023, then immediately underwent Tommy John surgery after just five outings, earning the Comeback Player of the Year award for his bravery. Unfortunately, Boston fans did not get the memo that they were supposed to be welcoming.

The day after the loss, Hendriks posted a blaring red message on his Instagram story warning trolls who were upset about one singular subpar outing against the New York Mets in May to cool their jets.

"Just as an FYI, threats against my life and my wife's life are horrible and cruel. You need help," Hendriks began with fury. "Leaving comments telling me to commit suicide and how you wish I died from cancer is disgusting and vile."

One fan, known as Ben_Byerly2, even doubled down, sharing Hendriks' message with the comment, "LiamHendriks. You literally talked shit on the whole organization yesterday then went out and blew the game. Shut the f*** up and be better, princess." Precious.

This disgusting level of vitriol coming from the city that loves to act as if they invented baseball and they're the only team with fans that are pure of heart. Please.

It's ironic that Boston has beaten the Cardinals twice in the World Series since 2004, because both of those fan bases and their toxic combustion (hiding behind a shared veneer of old-fashioned morality) occupying the same stadium should create enough strained phoniness to bend steel girders.

Anyone messaging any athlete directly to voice their negative opinions and encourage suicidal ideation is a disgusting individual. Anyone making things personal with Hendriks, after his mountain of struggles compounded from 2022 through 2024, deserves something far harsher than a public shaming.

There are horrible eggs in every fan base, but Boston is the one that loves to claim clean hands. This is now a clear piece of evidence that, much like the water their city so often loves to caterwaul about, a large portion of Boston is woefully dirty. Don't let them pretend this villainy is confined to New York.
