The New York Yankees are about to find out what their new-look pitching staff is all about very soon. Their transformative 2025 trade deadline has resulted in sweeping roster changes on both sides of the ball, but the bullpen was completely altered in a matter of three hours.
Brian Cashman acquired Pirates closer David Bednar, Giants closer Camilo Doval, and Rockies reliever Jake Bird on Thursday, all of whom have been added to the active roster and will immediately slot into important roles. And those moves forced Marcus Stroman out of the Bronx. Wild last 24 hours.
Before the deadline, the trio of Devin Williams, Luke Weaver and Tim Hill were the only acceptable options on a consistent basis ... and that still wasn't great. All three have been relative rollercoasters this year and are experiencing uncharacteristic struggles. Part of that has been overuse. Part of that has been bad luck.
Well, Cashman's acquisitions should certainly help the overuse issue given the new players' track records. But in classic Yankees fashion, we will simply "hope" the bad luck goes away. It's what this organization has conditioned us to do.
That's not to say we aren't excited, though. It really feels like the Yankees could do some serious damage the rest of the way, especially since nobody in their division made particularly impactful moves.
Here's what we're looking at for the rest of the way.
Projecting the New York Yankees' pitching depth chart after 2025 trade deadline, Marcus Stroman release
Yankees' Starting Rotation
- Max Fried
- Carlos Rodón
- Will Warren
- Cam Schlittler
- Luis Gil (returning from IL any day now)
Injury Notes: Ryan Yarbrough (oblique) will be back at some point in August.
Yankees' Bullpen
- Devin Williams (Closer)
- David Bednar (Setup Man)
- Luke Weaver
- Camilo Doval
- Tim Hill
- Jake Bird
- Brent Headrick (possible option candidate when Gil returns)
- Jonathan Loaisiga
- JT Brubaker (possible option candidate when Gil returns)
Injury Notes: Fernando Cruz (oblique) and Mark Leiter Jr. (leg) will be back at some point in August.
Minor League Notes: Ian Hamilton, Yerry De Los Santos, Scott Effross, Allan Winans and Michael Arias can be promoted at any time without sacrificing a 40-man roster spot.
Objectively, this bullpen is now worlds better than what they had just days ago. With Bednar and Doval able to handle high-leverage situations, Williams and Weaver can get some breathers. With Bird in the mix, perhaps some more competition can be fostered among Headrick, Loaisiga and Brubaker. And hopefully Loaisiga and Brubaker and get better at covering multiple innings of work.
The rest is on Aaron Boone to figure out as he puts the pieces together. And by late August the group should be even stronger.
